I have been looking for a new set of carp rods and I came across the Daiwa basia.
These rods have a price tag approximately £500 per rod, and this is way beyond my budget,
The question I would like to ask is and this is not a criticism to anyone, but why spend this amount of money which is basically a rod of the shelf whereas if you went to a rod builder you can have rod made to your specifications. A blank, handle, eyes, whipping and handle choice. As I say this is not a criticism to anyone. Would be grateful if anyone can enlighten me. Many thanks.

Same reason people buy a brand new car off the forecourt I stead of picking the exact extras and colours you want. Because they want it now, not later, and/or they lack the imagination to pick anything other than the factory fittings anyway, or they assume that the rod manufacturer knows best for what fittings to use.
It does seem that a factory build rod is easier to sell on too, and resale value is important to a lot of people.

I bought a set last year. A mate won them on a raffle and didn't have the need for them. I wanted a set of rods with a bit more kick than my 20 year old century ng+ so bought them for less than half price and they've never been used. I've used Daiwa reels for the last 30+ years so have alot of faith in the company. I've tried mates Harrisons and free spirits and to be honest I didn't like the feel of them. These rods are pretty dam nice looking to be honest. Hand rolled carbon in their factory in Scotland so the union jack actually means something unlike some UK companies that have the blanks flown in from the far east. Ive only used them a couple of times last Autumn and had a couple of fish on them. They cast beautifully from what I remember and you can really feel the power they have in reserve. Once I buy a set of rods I never sell them so I've got these beauties for life.
Yes I would prefer a full duplon handle instead of the shrink wrap and yeah probably prefer a different reel seat than the Alps one but seeing as I'm not a bloody woman I'll get over it.
I rememeber my centuries cost £245 20+ years ago when the NG+ came out. I worked behind the bar earning £60 a shift or whatever it was. Took me alot longer to save up for 3 of them than it would a set of basias nowadays as I'd get them in a week of work £500 for a rod that will last 20+ years is ok with me that have been hand made in this country by a company that I can send them back to have them sorted if I need to. Ive heard some absolutely terrible stories of trying to deal with free spirit for after sale care.
If I fish a couple or meres which need long range fishing in the future I'd happily buy 2 13ft ones no problem. They really are beautiful rods. Now if you are talking over priced then it's the reels I can't understand people buying.
