I have been using baitrunner type reels on my long range/ big water set up for a while now as I am a big fan of baitrunners. Old habits die hard and all that.
On my three rods I have been using a pair of Penn Affinity Liveliner 7000's and one XTB 14000 Big Baitrunner.
My Penns have been switched to a different pair of rods for method fishing, so I need to replace them on my 13 footers.
My quandry is whether to buy two more Big Baitrunners, or go with a set of three " traditional " style Big Pits.
I quite like the look of the Daiwa Crosscast 45 SCW's , with the gold spools and the slightly slower " fast drag " knobs.
Would I really notice the lighter weight of them vs the BB's, particularly regarding casting performance ?
I should add that they would be in Free Spirit 13ft 3.5 SU's , which aren't the lightest anyway.
So, would I be best served matching the one BB with two more, or replacing with three big pits, eg Crosscast, Ultegras etc ?
The rods aren't used at all often, so I am leaning towards buying two BB's to keep cost down on a seldom used set .
Any comments/observations most welcome, ta.....

I am not sure that my reply will help you, but I will give you my opinion about this thread.
In my collection I have Power aero XSB and Shimano medium baitrunner ci4 xtra reels. Between this two reels I prefer baitrunners because they are also lightweight, no instant drag like on Power aero and simply I like that kind of mechanism. Also they are very solid built.
My casting distance is up to 100 meters and baitrunners in medium size do that job without any problem. Now I am not pretty sure why I bought Power aero few months ago (maybe I wanted something "new" in my reel collection). Power aero xsb is very good big pit reel for short and log distance but I do not prefer that kind of instant drag. Last few days I am thinking to sell them and buy Shimano Big baitrunner XTB in ci4 form. It is lighter, better/smooth work than regular-non ci4 model. In both options they are not so lightweight like my Power aero xsb. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that xtb baitrunners are not on the same level of quality like previous model (my xtra model is 8 years old, no problem at all)
So, if you like that kind of mechanism (baitrunner) and aesthetics buy it in ci4 form (if you can afford it). I think they are still more durable than most of available reels on the market (no included some top end Shimano or Daiwa reels). Sorry for my bad english.

I used to be a bait runner fan, but since changing over to front drag reels I'd never go back. The clutches are smoother and just makes them a nicer reel to use. Not sure but if seem to remember reading quite a few bad reports of the crosscasts though. I'd highly recommend the Penn affinity 7000 size , they are are seriously nice reel and if they had a daiwa or Shimano badge on they'd be twice the price

I've got the xta big baitrunners and a mate has the xtb ci4 ones, his are better looking but mine are perfect for all my angling.
I am a shimano baitrunner advocate from the early 90s and find they are just convenient. My 8010gt's still sit on my pike rods.

Yeah, I have been using baitrunners for Donkey's too .
My main set up, used for nearly all my fishing, is Free Spirit ES rods with Medium XTB Baitrunners.
Best allround rods I have ever owned and thebMedium Baitrunners have been a perfect match for me .
