Hi all, I've started making my own baits again after many years (only ever used to do the pre fabricated packs- grange csl, active 8 etc and hookbaits/ pop ups occasionally, purely down to the realisation that for my European river fishing I do not need an (expensive £5-6 per kilo bait. The carp muller everything! But particles not an option 24mm plus boilies are king.
Have used some cheap (off cuts from Alan parbery mistral which is clearly very basic bait and works as feed/ bulking out baiting, also mixed box over runs etc but want to make it how I need it, size wise too
Baiting up in huge quants becomes expensive, have used the off cuts/ feed bait route which is cheaper but looking making something £2-2.5 per kg
My question is how much liquid in total (food/oil/flavour should I be adding to 1kg base mix as a guide?

The samples of river bait has been..
1kg of aa baits HNV bird food or 500g 50/50 500g ground conditioner
50ml CSL
20ml hemp oil
10ml scopex concentrate
10ml strawberry sweet Ade
8 eggs
Recommended amount of preservatives

As I already have quite a few liquids/ ingredients not really factoring into cost..Is this too much liquids? Have given some to a friend who caught a couple of small ones from a French canal on them.

Also leads me to another question as I've got a few bits, to make a bait for uk winter fishing now I'm doing a bit more, to be made in smaller amounts

1kg HNV birdfood
100g beef liver powder
20ml liver hydro
30ml minamino
10ml strawberry concentrate
10ml strawberry sweet Ade
20ml hemp oil
8 eggs
Recommended amount of preserve

Excuse the long message any pointers or help on the liquid incision levels and or simple cheap recipes would be greatly appreciated,or if these recipes are crap! the river bait is primarily for that- making an affordable attractive bait

Many thanks

With regards to liquids you could go up to 125ml of liquids in 1kg with no problem with rolling, for an example in a standard fishmeal basemix I use 70ml salmon oil, 40ml of an amino/hydro liquid, 2ml sweetener, 10ml flavouring.

If you are looking for a cheap bait for Euro river fishing why not get yourself some large pellets and add your own liquid/flavour combination to it and allow to absorb, then make a decent quality boilie in lesser quantity with the same flavour and liquid combo? This way its easy and quicker to make a big batch of personalized nutritious pellets as well as some top quality boilies to mix in with the pellets and have as hook baits.

Just a thought.

Also if you are looking for great cheap recipes take a look at the "Carpforum approved boilie recipe" thread pinned at the top of the bait section.

Hope this helps.

Appreciate the reply. Interesting hear you apply so much liquid, given me the confidence to get a bit more in there. Maybe my sweetener/ flavour levels a bit out of balance
Totally avoid pellets/ fishy baits these days due to the cats and barbel etc while I still catch a few, a large non fishy boilie seems to be the way for singling out more carp
Thanks again

You will likely need more than 8 eggs for 1kg of base mix BTW and you may also struggle with 50% ground conditioner in the base mix.

Struggle with rolling you mean? I've rolled that exact mix in 16mm as a test and it rolled ok, must have swallowed up a bit more thann 1kg of base mix though as I ended up with 1.8kg of bait after left to dry overnight. I'm assuming even more liquids/oils wudve given more weight

Yeah I mean struggle with rolling and it binding together. But if you have done it before and it worked out then I stand corrected.
Are you sure?
