I changed my Shimano XTDs spools to the ice washer system. I now want to convert them back to the original as i'm not keen. The original washers were heavily greased when I took them out. My question is do I need to use a specific type of reel grease? and how much do I need to grease them?

Carbon washers are just a very light smear of Teflon grease. For felt washers I've always used Cal's Universal Drag Grease, Shimano also sells their own variant both are basically just a high temp grease with some Teflon to stop corrosion far as I know.

Why did you originally want to change them, did they feel a bit 'sticky' and wouldn't release line unless there was a strong pull? The thick grease is grabbing too much.
I have recently taken my old felt washers out of my vintage ultegra XT reels, washed the grease out of them with hot water and washing up liquid, repeated, then rinsed.
After a thorough drying I found a couple had become misshapen so I trimmed the edges before reassembly.
I put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on each felt washer, and compressed the drag overnight.
Now its silky smooth and doesn't feel sticky before the pressure let's line off.

I believe my Shimano felt washers came oiled when new in the reel, not greased. I've been using Singer sewing machine oil on my reels, seems good.

I guess I jumped on the bandwagon going for a smooth clutch and quick release drag, but with the carbon washers your loosing them important drag turns when I'm playing a fish, where I really like to fine tune the clutch

I'm contemplating doing a mix of felt and carbon on mine so it's smooth and has a good range of clicks.
