Check your house insurance since you can normally specify a set value for sport equipment away from the property. The problem with all of these policies is, in the event of a claim you will more than likely have a sizeable excess and be required to demonstrate ownership or provide receipts etc which is difficult if some of your gear is many years old. Might be simpler to fish any dodgey venues with cheap gear rather than take a risk.

Fortunately I've never had to rely on it yet, but once a year or so I go around the whole house, garage etc taking photos of each room. If I ever do need to make an insurance claim then hopefully a picture of everything in situ may provide some evidence that I did actually own what I'm claiming for.

I use direct line home insurance plus, think it covers me up to 5k for outbuildings.
I had my van broken into outside my home with my gear in a few years back - i told Direct Line everything and they even paid out for the theft from the van so always use them now.
