A friend of mine is considering buying a plot of land in France that has a lake on it.
It is primarily to set up as a rental holiday home, but he would like to be able to include fishing as part of the package.
Is there anything that he needs to be aware of to be able to offer this like licenses etc?
I will of course be trying to encourage him to stock with some decent carp....

Far too much involved to post on here. You'd need a book or whole website.

First thing he needs to check is if it is a so called 'eau close' (closed lake) or not. Because if it is not (this is when there is a stream running in on one end and going out the other, then you need to make sure that the lake is certified by the DDT. This is necessary for all lakes that can be drained by letting water out to a stream via an outlet. This way they want to reduce the risk of polluting surrounding nature. Your friend's broker for the plot of land should be aware of this and should be able to help him in getting the necessary information.
Lakes that don't comply to the DDT mostly need a lot of work done, and this can get quite costly.
There is a lot of other stuff to check, but in my humble opinion, this should be the first thing.
Best regards,
Bart
