Hi All. I have just purchased some ultegra xtd 14000 reels. I have read people put ice washers in there spools to improve them. Is it worth doing or just another one of those things to sell you something. Any advice on people's experiences would be great
I took out both the ice washers and the Teflon washer and put the original back in, you lose so much drag points that it is no longer nice, I really don't see what's nice about a 3/4 turn (even less with the ice washers) from open to fully closed.
Then I tried 1 felt washer and 2 Teflon washer and this gives you 1.5 turn from open to fully closed
and i still use this.

I had the ice washers in the XTD 14000s before I replaced them with the ci4s. They do make the clutch go from fully locked to free spool in 1/4 to 1/2 turn which does take some getting used to. The other advantage is how smooth it makes the clutch for playing fish on - far better than the felt washers. Like most things it takes a bit of time to get used to but it's definitely not a gimmick - improves the reels a lot in my opinion.
