Hi can I have suggestions for van hire into Europe this summer please?

Just hire one and don't tell them you're going abroad, then do your own European insurance or you will pay a fortune through the hire company! Risky i know but works out cheaper than telling them you want to take it abroad.

Of course if you have an accident that will take some explaining to the hire company, definitely not worth the risk.

Or breakdown or if customs / French police ask for the paperwork to show you're allowed to be taking it over the water etc.
Probably also invalidate your own insurance as you'd not actually have the permission of the hire company for use abroad and we know some insurers will look for an easy out.

Cost me around £80 extra for the week with Hertz so definitely not worth risking IMO.

I've been through this one quite a few times.
We used to use Europcar. They started out really well, but then went downhill. We've had a flat tyre (the morning we were leaving) which needed repair. And we've had low AdBlue (not a major problem).
I tried Avis - and it's probably just the local branch - but they did not instill any confidence - got the dates wrong for the booking, despite me going in person. Cancelled that.
So - we were scratching a bit for this years' trips, until we noticed Enterprise now allow their vans to go to France. Historically - you walk in to one of their branches, ask about France and it was a straight "no". Pretty simple process. Around £400 for an 11 day hire (around the double bank holiday for the Queen). Large van. We were happy with that between three of us.
Hope this helps.

You will need £150 onto your quote for Cross Border Policy.

Worth keeping an eye on Enterprise prices, when I initially looked for our trip a small van was around £150 for a week plus £150 for the cross border. The same van now is £400 plus £150 for cross border!
