I have booked Holly Lodge 12 on York Lakeside Lodges at the end of August this year for 6 nights with my misses.
Looks simply incredible, beautiful private lodge right at the lakeside with hot tub etc.
Has anyone been, how did you get on?

Hi Pal,
I fished there 2-3 years ago, the missus went to Spain with the daughter , and i went for a weeks fishing with the dog....
The lodge your in, has its own area of water, which can be a good thing,but its in the corner of the lake so if the fish are not there, you will have too fish from another swim rather than from outside your lodge....but its like any lake really you fish in the swims where the fish are, rather than the most comfortable.......
When i was there the bloke in that lodge had less fish than myself but his were of a better size..... my largest was 28lb and had 6 over the week between 23lb to 28lb...he only had 2 fish but were both over 30lb.....
It's not a runs water, but hot a hard water either.... It can get a bit weedy,but not choked with weed....i found fishing over a good spread of boilies worked the best..... when i was there the owner wouldn't allow bait boats......there is a syndicate also on the lake but they cant fish the swims outside the lodges.... There is plenty of swims to fish and the most syndicate members that were on the lake was 3 at any one time.......
Most of the holiday makers in the lodges were there for a relaxing time and only a few actually went there for the fishing....... There is a good head of bream which i found, which changed the baits i used.... When i fished particle or pellets i was plagued with them, it might be worth taking some suitable tackle to target the bream as they are a very good size into double figures......
The bloke that runs it Neil is a nice chap but i think he was a bit socially awkward, so didn't really like to chat for two long.... He doesn't pester you he basically leave you alone apart from the odd hello if he was passing......

That's an awesome write up, thank you for taking the time to do that.
That's a good idea actually going without your misses just with the dog. Dogs don't usually complain that fishing is boring and they want to bugger off doing something else.
I might have to do that myself another year.

Not so bad in Holly you are in a almost private bay and the fish get in there lots when it's warm but nowadays gets that horrible candyfloss weed in the summer and quite bad .You can't sit in the lodge and fish as you have to go round through lodge to rods and there is lots of snags .poor angling if you do and the syndicate bailiff will pull you if caught .It used to be a great water not to busy really well kept but fishing wise not that easy it was a proper carp water .I have been going 2 to 4 times a year for ten years or so and always got a swim I wanted and used to leave my gear and go out with the wife and mainly fished nights .Well it got sold and has massively gone down hill.They are cramming people on loads of people booking 1 lodge and cramming on .When I went last may as I drove round to lodge the whole far bank which was always empty was crammed with rods the whole length.Noddy rods stuck in the air you name it .2 pegs had 9 rods out some no alarms 1 had a fish on and they were in the lodge 100 yards away partying apparently they had already been warned .Not by the new greedy owners as they only pretend they care but they don't it's all about money .When I went past an hour later the rods were still out with a fish on and partying screaming and shouting coming from lodge 5 pm however rods were gone on way back I presume the syndicate bailiff turned up
.Some of the advertising likes to hint you can fish from lodges even though you can't .They have destroyed the lovely far end by flattening trees
The old owner has been in tears at what's happened to the place and the stories the great syndicate lads tell you is in keeping with what I came across .There was drunken partying every night and worse .Many long term regulars will never go back the prices have nearly doubled and the owners claim it's 5 star .All they did was pain cupboard doors put hot tubs in and new covers on some old furniture .They did nothing about the thick black mould in all the bathrooms or antiquated TVs and terrible WiFi .The owners are liars and have wrecked the place absolutely gutted as there was no where else like it..pRetty obvious what they are allowing or a couple book a lodge and turn up with loads mates fishing tit.Its a free for all as there is no one about at night or after tea when we were there never been anywhere with so Manny dickheads on .Some sleep in their lodges hundreds of yards away from still fishing rods .How they get away with calling them 5 star is anyone's guess I have pictures to show how disgusting the bathroom was .As for Holly you are lucky those to lodges are the only ones away and almost private As for clobers review I would have give you a even better review from how it used to be

Holly looked nice and private, commanded it's own piece of water and certainly seemed to be separate from the crowd, hence it's appeal. Being honest, I'm not going there entirely to fish. The misses sister and her fella are also in the lodge next to us and when the girls disappear off to the shops we'll probably get a bit of chance to wet a line, but I've already been told I certainly won't be fishing non-stop and definitely not at night!
I can't really comment on the way it's run since it's my first ever visit but it wasn't cheap and if there is black mould on the walls then my misses will be first in the line to complain.

If the candy floss weed doesn't come up as bad as when I was last there you should do ok in Holly lots of overhangs and Lillie's and the fish often get in there .The bonus is no one else can fish that area unless you are unlucky and someone is fishing in the lodge next door as there are 2 lodges next to each other in the bay .Many times used to be the only one seriously carping or just 1 or 2 syndi members on it was fantastic had some good hits of fish and some blanks .It's always had the odd idiots on sleeping in lodges with rods out etc even once had 2 Lads turn up on a empty lake next to me and spod morning noon and night they had sacks piled up must have put 200kg in at least and blanked for the week .With the weed and being sickened by the decline I never fished last time I was in Holly just got brownie points and did wifey trips .My mate had helicopter the lakes biggest around 37lb at the entrance to the bay which is a good swim and not to far away.One thing you could do in case they haven't done anything about the weed is take a rake do a few close spots I recon you would bag up especially as you are resting the swim .

I was TBH a little shocked by your post, not suggesting its not true, just the total opposite from what I experienced when i went.

Yes mate he sold and went for a coffee and chat with him .He was living in the cottage that used to be rented out but said he was thinking of moving out as the devastation being caused pulling trees down to make way for more lodges etc had left him in tears .He loved plants trees and flowers etc
The far end was lovely with tree cover etc it's been opened up .He told me there had been drug raids by the police and fights between drunken lodge parties.From what was going on when I was last there it is not surprising at all .Obviously this won't be going on all the time but what I can tell you is the new owner is a money grabber and liar and all they care about is cramming people on and making money .Met loads of regulars there over the years and they were mainly none fisherman but became friends .I have no doubt many will stop going .Holly lodge should be away from all this and ok but you will hear the late night noise though if dickheads are on .

I think you will be fine where you are it's out of the way and private and if it's not choked with that horrible candifloss weed again you will likely catch quite a few fingers crossed no one is carping in adjacent lodge .Syndicate lads are smashing very helpful although I believe they had their fee doubled and can't be happy with the changes wouldn't be surprised if some have given it up
