I,ve been glugging my hookbaits in squid brand fish sauce for a while. Is it a good idea through the winter or is it better to use a vegetable oil like hemp oil or similar? I know the Squid brand fish sauce is quite thin but will it solidify in colder water?

It won't solidify and is a very potent liquid for cold water use. High in salts. Use with confidence.
You can also use it to water down yeast extract, then add a big spoonful of liver - glm etc for a wonderful low fat dip

I stopped using oils to "Glug" with in the winter months a couple of years ago.
I started to become aware that I may be doing better if I did not use oils. I came up with the theory that the oil coagulates on the outside of the bait due to the low temperature and apart from the excess that floats to the surface stays there and stops or reduces the transfer of the flavours and attractants in the bait into the water. And as the oil is coagulated, is it itself leaching a scent trail into the water, something tells me it does not.
But, as I fish a hard water in the Winter months (stupidity) and catches are a rarity, it is hard to come to a conclusive result.
So, I stick to water soluble glugs like fish sauces etc instead to be safe. But, even then, I think when your lead and bait hits the water, it virtually all gets washed off the outside unless it is very "Tacky" and all that is left is what has soaked into the bait.
I suppose a test in a tank of very cold water would show some results of a bait glugged in oil, ie does the water become discoloured with the dye or can you smell the flavouring in the water.
