How much shock leader should i have on my spod reel ? can you put to much on ?

Length I would go for is with spod at line length for casting with about 6 turns on the spool

I just use an esp tapered mono leader ...9m I think...as long as you 5 or 6 turns of your leader on the reel you will be fine...

Going to go against the grain here and say 3 rod lengths. With 5-6 turns on the reel the knot is coming off the spool very early in the cast and can cause ring fraps. With 3 rod lengths the knot comes off that little bit later and the line is now peeling smoothly through the rings. Not saying this is the definitive but it has definitely worked better for me

Thats how I do it and used to do it on my beach casting set ups too.I get the knot at the bottom of the spool too

I tried so many different variations - maybe different casting techniques play a role in this as well - as I'd experienced so many cracks offs it got really grinding. Finally sussed out what I was doing wrong regardless of how long or short my braided leaders were - braid I found is better for transmitting max power - was that I was not keeping the line tight on the spool and had some slack in it which gave me the crack offs. I know, dumb me.

Do you mean a leader length of 3 rod lengths(36 ft) or 3 rod lengths of leader actually on the spool plus the line through the rings and down to the lead (54 ft). Lengths could be a couple of feet or so out depending on rods etc.
My preference would be 5/6 turns on the reel.

Thanks. Seems the general concensus is pretty much the same. A turn or two either side of 30ft. Me too.
