What ones have you tried?
Ive just picked up some of the gardner captive ones to give a go. Not sure if they are discontinued or not though as there wasnt many about. Have to make your own cords up though. The fox captive ones are no doubt decent, but they are out of stock everywhere. They come with cords and the plastic winding thing

The Fox captive ones are superb...however it's the older MK1 version you need.
So much better than the new version due to the fact the gate is at an angle so every time you strike or wind in the lead flicks of no problem...the same cannot be said of the new ones I'm afraid.
Look out for them on ebay.

The non-captive back leads are designed to break apart easily in the event of the lead getting snagged up.
Is the lakebed weedy/silty? That might be why you are losing them, and if so, possibly should be using them in the first place, they're better suited to flat lake beds with no weed.
I must admit I carry some back leads in my lead pouch but can't even remember the last time I used them.

Hi Colin,
I had the same problem for years, there's usually some weakness with them whereby they can easily pop off a plastic clip or some other design flaw.
Quite some years ago I found these being made by a guy selling them on ebay. I'd never seen anything like them. That plastic clip on the top sits right inside the top hat section and I can count on one hand how many I've lost in the many years I've been using them.
