Will a wide gape hook do, or does the hook have to be a curved shank ??
I've got plenty of wide gape hooks, but would need to buy some curved shank ones.

I use wide gape and had plenty useing then and had no problem with them

Have your hook bead slightly higher up the shank and test in a bucket of water.With a wide gape you won't actually be able to see the hook from above even with smaller baits

Thanks folks.
First time after Carp coming up. (The Barbel aren't playing ATM) I've bought some Gemini tidy rigs and also the bits and bobs to make my own. I didn't want to buy hooks if what I've got will be ok.

Most would say use a size 4 of your chosen hook, I would agree. Some have reported issues with smaller hooks on a Ronnie.

Second that. I use a Mugga #2 curve shank, even on 12mm's. My thinking is the hook is rather invisible anyways, especially if you slide the hookbead up the shank as said before. Does the job and has brilliant hookholds. Says a lot because I went through quite a few types of hooks.

Curved shank is better than a wide gape hook pattern for that application, based on my experience of using both. I use the Atomic Trappa - excellent hooks for making up spinner rigs. I use a size 5 with a 14/15mm pop up. Very high hook up rate, very (very) rare to lose a fish to a hook pull. If I use a larger popup, say 18mm, I use a size 2 Korda curve shank, they're pretty decent, although need a little extra sharpening. Always use a larger hook relative to the bait with that rig, else you'll start getting done or lose fish to hook pulls...
