I think I can honestly say that I have never chucked out a pop up bigger than 18mm.....
Today I had a delivery from a shop and they had chucked in a couple of freebies including a pot of 20mm pop ups, in fact, they are measuring a consistent 22mm....I was just about to chuck them in the bait cupboard where they would probably have sat collecting dust when it got me thinking....12mm pops are very in vogue at the moment with 15mm appearing large so are we missing a trick?
Any thoughts on using 20mm plus pop ups you bait-buffs?

Cat anglers use them all the time, would be interesting to know if they pick up Carp by mistake, I had the same thoughts as you especially in the winter as a single.

Don't worry about it,
6lb bream can easily fit a 26mm pop up in their gobs, if they really want it

Not worried mate and wouldn't hesitate to use a double 20mm bottom bait....it was more from the point of view that something so big and blatant doesn't appear to be even considered for a pop up presentation and could we be missing a trick?

22 and 25mm pop ups catch just fine.

These larger Pop ups, do you fish tight to the hook like a Ronnie (on ring swivel on hook shank) or on a hair with half inch gap from the hook bend?

I've made my own pop ups to 24mm - work just fine and on some of the lower fish density big pits I have fished, seem to get you more takes when only fishing hook baits. Can't see what the issue is with using hook baits that size - look at the size of say a 30lb carp's mouth - you could get a golf ball (42mm) in there no problem at all
