Morning all,
Last week I snapped my line clip clean off my old emblem S that I use for spodding.
I bought an emergency replacement spool as a 'quick fix'.
Had 30 mins to spool up yesterday but am getting very wonky line-lay with the new spool.
Loads bunched up at the bottom with a bit less bunching at the top. See pic.

Any ideas? Remove one drag washer?

Assuming its the correct spool then it is sat to far forward maybe there was a spacer already stuck to bottom of new spool? but i would look at checking for correct spacers then try removing a shim or two

No spacers I could see. Will try removing a washer.
To check. The reel is a 5500T, but the new spool is a 5000T.
I assumed that's fine and compatible as my understanding of the higher numbers is just deeper spools/increased capacity.
Or, have I made an error!?

The spacers are behind the spool. It's nothing to do with drag washers

Yes the spools fit the two different sized reels.... but there is nothing to state that the relevant heights are the same.
The 5500 spool is obviously made in a different mould to the 5000.
Without accurate calipers it will be hard to measure.
I would have swapped the line clip then there would be no re-spooling needed !
Infact I would not have purchased a new spool to start with but upgraded the line clip.

So drag washers make no difference in spool 'height' - that's just for inner gubbins working?

Drag washers make no difference whatsoever to line lay.
It is the height that the spool is on the "axle" that determines that.
Edit : Just looked at your pic.
That's the worse line lay I have even seen in my life !

Yeah, bad, isn't it!
I think it's cos it's a 5000 spool on a 5500.
I thought all reel bodies were the same and the spool sizes was the depth of spool (rather than any size difference on length).
I think I might just use this as an excuse for a new dedicated spod reel altogether!

Looking at your picture the spool needs shims both up and down so I cant see that helping! It has to be the wrong spool mate.

Yes in theory you are correct....however as the Emblem S 500T was made in three different countries..originally Japan then Malaysia and lastly Taiwan there must be a slight difference.
The only thing to do is either swap the line clip or build up the center of the spool with tape to compensate for the bunching at each end .
Them spools aren't cheap either...I've never seen a used one for sale .

~£30 for new spool on england angling. I bought in a hurry from the lake and thought it'd 'just work' - but obvs not. Wish I'd have just put that towards a newer reel altogether. Ah well, you live and learn.

I once bought a set of Emcast Plus 6000 reels thinking they were the same as the 5000 models only larger capacity, turned out they were not. They were however the same as the 5500. I later found in that model that the 4500 and the 5000 were interchangeable and the 5500 and the 6000 could be swapped.
I bet this is the same with the Emblem S models...they originated from the same era.

Yeah, that could make sense.
Anyway, rather than try to fudge something, I just pulled the trigger on the 45mm crosscast spod reel.
Which is what I should have done in the first place, but hey-ho.
Should feel like a rolls royce compared to that old emblem S. And with a line clip that's not gonna snap eventually.
