What are peoples thoughts when it comes to the firmness of a boilie.

I have quite a large collection of carp fishing magazines and the range of opinions on the subject with some much preferring harder 'crunchier' baits whilst others clearly look for a much softer boilie.

I have always preferred a soft boilie by design/result meaning i like to pick and buy a bait already like that before trying to alter its texture.

I have had instant bites on well and truly frozen baits, bullet like air dried and likewise baits i have made myself that are like a firmer paste rather than a traditional skinned boilie.

Opinions?

As a general rule I personally prefer soft baits, however there are circumstances that require a firmer bait, I'm thinking here of when you intend or need to use a throwing stick or when you want your bait to remain intact on the lake bed for upwards of 24 hours unaffected by the attention of small fish.

Another thing to remember is that if you use freezer baits you can always soak the baits to achieve the softness even if the baits were firm to start with. My experience with shelf life boilies is that they don't always take on liquids or even water so I would check first.
