Yes you can use an intervalometer on the canon G12 I've just got myself a pixel TW-283 E3 wireless intervalometer of Amazon for £39.99 to use on my canon M6 mirrorless camera little bit more expensive than some of the cable version of eBay .But good thing with this version the remote and dongle that plugs into the camera both have power of button so they save what you programme into them unlike the cable version where you have to take the batteries out to turn it off . And this model I've mentioned will work with the Canon G12 aswell

With an extension cable but I found I don't use the cable often. I did consider a wireless one but for how little I catch on my Syndicate I didn't see the need

I find an extension really handy as you can have the buttons next to the matt ready to start without stepping away from the fish. Especially useful if your zooming in and moving the camera further back to get a nicer pic.

I have the neewer NW860 TX shutter release for my G12. Its a wireless remote and the receiver clips onto the top of the camera. Both the remote and the receiver are very compact aswell. I got mine from amazon but a quick search shows they are available on ebay for around 15-20 quid.
