Hi I'm quite new to carp fishing and I'm looking for some advice on spodding, I have a spod rod & reel but I'm confused as to what to put on it?
It's loaded with 18lb line but I was gonna replace with a braid, what sort of breaking strain? I was then gonna put some braided shock leader on , again what sort of breaking strain? I am fishing some lakes when I will need to spod/cast 20-25 wraps?
Any help appreciated.

I use mono and braid leader as its not as harsh on the clip...
what sort of breaking strain?
Around 50lb will suffice...

I'd go with braid straight through as distance under 100 yds.
Best braid I've found is Berkley Whiplash Crystal (white) if you get 40-50lb you won't need a leader. To avoid wind knots and frap ups don't overfill your spool, leave a couple mm lower than spool lip and wet the braid well before use.
Golf glove or finger stall also advisory on your casting finger..

Depends on what works for u, i would not recommend braid straight through at least in my case i bought a reel that was pre spooled with braid and it was terrible i had wind knots all the time, i used mono to braid didnt get knots it worked well though the mono had a bit of stretch in it so pulling the spomb on impact also i use it scaning around the bottom with a lead sometimes had me work a bit more because of the stretch. For a while now i have been using some 0.18 cheapish braid bulk and then 50 lb braid for shock and is the best out of the 3, no stretch while pulling flying off really well and never cracks off. The only thing i would recommend is to soak the braid for a while before spooling up and put it in a narrow cup and then spool. U wont get knots.

I use 50lb Berkeley whiplash straight through never have any problem just use a loop to loop knot, still using the same loop that I was about 2 years ago

If your spodding with mono the stretch can cause issues depending on how you hit the clip too hard you will often get a bit of bounce back like a bungee effect causing you to land off your spot. Braid straight through will be fine but need 50lb to be safe. I wouldn't like to fish braid straight through for anything more than 100 yards. A fully loaded spomb can weigh around 8 ounce depending on what your loading into it that's a hell of a weight. To take the stress of the cast a shockleader is recommended you can also couple this with a lower diameter braid to make the distance easier. Personally I would go with a shockleader and you will be set up for anything from 20 yards to 120. Keep the braid wet 👍🏼

Wrap it 5 times around the spool the length of the rod and back down to the butt eye. Can use more

Around 20lb would be perfect. 50lb leader attached by a back to back grinner and away you go mate 👍🏼

20lb braid whiplash I use and then I use a shock leader , avid , spomb do one too .

Using braid for spodding as my reel came pre-spooled but also use an ESP tapered shock leader, 15 to 40lb but i also use a Coastlock snap swivel size 1/0 so i can quickly change between different size spombs.
