I admit that I probably don't have much of an idea what carp fishing is like in the real world as I've not fished club waters for probably twenty years, and I only really fish day tickets very rarely in winter when no one else is there.
However I joined Facebook last week to sell some pop ups and a bivvy. My mates had warned me. OMG they weren't wrong. I had one guy post on an advert saying the baits are ****, and that he's made bait for fifty years and everything I'd said about bait was “bulls@@t”. When I told him I'd actually been making bait for twenty years on and off he suddenly starts back peddling and apologies.
Then on my bivvy advert this cock and his mate start making comments. Again saying I don't know what I'm talking about. Again when I answered them with facts and it became clear that actually I was right and they were clearly wrong. One of them apologies.
What the hell is going on in carp fishing? Where have all these people come from who seem to think it's a pi@@ing contest. Why do these people feel the need to talk down to complete strangers in what I can only think is an attempt to show off about knowledgeable they have or to try to show that they are super experienced. When they don't know the first thing about me, or how long I've been carping or where I fish etc etc. I seems like they just want to make themselves feel better and when they realised that I'm not a newcomer that they can't bully then they lose interest. What would that sort of comment do to a young kid coming into the hobby? It's pathetic. As soon as they realise that they ain't gonna get one over on me then they shut up.
I'm genuinely a bit sad. My mates have told me that if I want to use Facebook then I just have to learn to ignore it. But where have all these unpleasant people come from. A sad combination of poor education, skunk and social media I'm afraid. Carp fishing seems to attract the lowest common denominator in fishing I'm afraid nowadays.

I've had a bit of a reality check this week. If I lost my tickets I couldn't be around these sorts of people and enjoy myself. I'd have to give up.
I can't stand rude people or bullies. I try to be nice to everyone. I'd never dream of making unpleasant comments about someone's stuff.

I can't get my head around this though. In my job I meet thousands of people a year. I visited probably five hundred homes last year. I met hardly any people who weren't nice decent people. One of my other interests is old aircooled VW stuff. I don't see any of these comments on those forums and believe me there's some proper knowledgeable people in that hobby. Not just some geezer who knows how to tie up a fecking Ronnie rig, but guys who can rebuild 40 year old engines and machine the parts themselves. I'm a complete noddy when it comes to engines but no one has ever been rude to me when I've asked a dumb question.
But carp fishing seems to be so completely different.

I did say in general of course there are still decent people about but carp angling does seem to attract more than its fair share of helmets !! I mean what other outdoor activity do you know where some of its participants use it as an excuse to get p*ssed or stoned 😂

Yes, you are correct. I don't want to sound a snob, but here goes! I'm afraid the only times in my life when I ever encounter the boy-man, the chav/stoner....underclass, call them whatever you like is whilst carp fishing. It doesn't happen in any other hobby that I'm involved in....or even any other branch of angling!

Every predominantly male leisure activity involves getting pissed, stoned or on the marching powder if people are that way inclined to begin with. Nobody can promote drugs as they're illegal, so it's not industry specific and just reflects society.
Same with the internet bullying and trolling which happens across the web, again not specific to fishing. The internet is mankind's best and worst enemy in one and why I won't have any personal social media account.

Really can't say I've ever seen Anyone on the golf course teeing off with a fat one hanging out of his mouth or the guys at the sailing club with a crate of beer in their boat !! Perhaps it's just the circles you mix in 😉

It's called getting old gents. You can see the state of some of our youfffs today in Hyde park or Bristol protesting, where on earth they get their confidence or cockyness from amazes me.The best way to not get annoyed is do sod all and talk to no-one , held myself together there else a full on rant was getting close. Pleased to say I have never been a Facebook user and never will as I have no friends anyway lol.
