I've just bought some new 10ft Free Spirit rods for pretty much all of my fishing.
I want to get a set of reels to use but want them to be adaptable to changing into a 12ft set up.
What reels (QD Type) wouldn't unbalance the 10ft set up and would still work well if used on a 12ft rod for more distance fishing?
I'm eyeing the Shimano Ci4's, would the 14000's be suitable or way to big?

On my 10ft Freespirit S-lites I went for Shimano Ultegra 5500's they pair up nicely and would be fine to swap over to any 12ft rod but as said the Shimano Aero's would be just as good, I have the Mitchell MX6 5000 full runners on my 11ft Ballista's nice reel plenty of bang for your buck comparable in size to the Shimano's.
You mention an all round reel so the Aero is probably the best choice or a reel in that category.

I have the 5500 ci4s xtc on both my 12ft, 10ft rods I really like them and are plenty enough for what I need. Very good reels aswell you won't be disappointed

Just the XTD version never really owned many Shimano reels and I believe these have issues with the clicker a mate of mine had S-lites with these on and had a go with them they balanced up lovely and as it was my Birthday last month so the wife treated me to the same setup, used a few times now will probably upgrade the drag as its a fair few turns from locked to freespool probably upgrade the clicker while I'm at it.

Spot on for the money cannot fault them, natty little reels walnut handle quick fold as well nice drag on both the front and baitrunner for a reasonably priced reel I would recommend them, they feel like a small version of my Infinities TBF.

I use Castizm QD's on my 10ft Hi S and they swap over to my 12ft ES nicely. Best mini big pit you can buy, end of. Lovely reels, very light, compact, super smooth clutches and the QD is excellent. I did look at 5500 size Shimanos, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired IMO, with flimsy bail arms and a cheap feel to them. I'm no fan of Shimano's instant drag either and a number of people I know bought Ultegras only to have gears break. I was standing in Johnson Ross when some lad had two he'd bought with that issue. I was told this was only a problem with the first batches into the UK, but like a lot of what Shimano is pushing these days, Daiwa have them beat. The Castizms are bullet proof - had mine 3 years now and they have been faultless. Get 'em while you can as Daiwa now have a new model out, which now I have seen one, I'm not so sure it's an upgrade from the one's I have...

I did want Castizms but they're like rocking horse 💩 at the minute.
A reel that did catch my eye earlier was the new Daiwa Emblem 35 quick drags, look decent and all the reviews I've watched and read are favourable.

Forgot to mention the old Castizms another fine choice personally I prefer Daiwa reels have or have had various models, the new castizm looks like the Emblem BR25 A except mag sealed and £100 quid dearer, I have the Emblems they would be another good choice.

I went for the Daiwa Emblem 35 SCW 5000C QD in the end but now thinking I should have gone for the GS4000's set up for QD.

Stick with the emblems mate, i sold my gs4000's pretty sharpish. Far to small for 12ft rods. On light tc 10 footers they're ideal, but they no cranking power and i couldnt see my set lasting the test of time.
