This is from my Ebac dehumidifier. It's a cover that goes over the LED's that show the status of the machine.
Nothing wrong with the LED's they are nice and bright but when this tinted cover goes over them they are hard to see, the cover must have darkened with age. The cover is made entirely of dark see through plastic rather than clear plastic with a brown coating.
So my question is how to make the dark brown not so dark. So far I've rubbed it with toothpaste and soaked it bleach but it hasn't made much difference, any other ideas?
I've asked ebac about a replacement part and they only supply this part along with the pcb which is a fortune.

Might sound silly but have you thought of putting it in the sun?. It's not too hot to warp it and may lighten it up. I even got a red face working in the garden in the bit of sun we had today.

I was wondering if it might darken it. I've heard of hydrogen peroxide and UV light though.

I thought that if stuff isn't uv protected then it'll fade. Could be wrong though.

Got me thinking has this thread.
Failing not being able to get it lightened up I'd look to see if I could drill a hole in it or two as you'd see the light then.

Only thing that comes to mind is a solvent cleaner
This stuff melts the top layer of upvc
I couldn't say how it would react with that material tho
Owatrol do some decent products for plastic restoration, might be worth a glance at their website
(polytrol is the one I'm thinking of)

That polytrol looks interesting. I'm not sure if it will help but you can a 100ml tester for £5 delivered. Might buy to have a play around with

Strangely enough I've an unused tin of polytrol.

It's cool stuff, it can really bring stuff back to life that would otherwise get binned.
I kept buying it by mistake when I wanted floetrol, they should really take a look at their product naming
The solvent cleaner is also really useful with a bit of common sense applied as to what you use it on, pretty cheap in toolstation too

I ordered the Polytrol trial size last night. I'm not sure if it will help in making that plastic clearer though but it looks interesting stuff and worthy of a place in my man cupboard along with the Hydrogen Peroxide I ordered that's meant to be good for plastic that's gone yellow.
Not sure what solvent cleaner you meant there's a few in Toolstation.

It's the upvc solvent cleaner
Floetrol is great, gives you a bit more time with acrylics and flattens the texture. I use it through a sprayer too as some paints don't really take thinning with water and you get a sort of subtle wood chip like texture.
More useful for diyers than professionals as you can't work at the same speed
