I used interparcel the last time and was £50 with £500 insurance. Prices have went through the roof. I always take out the insurance as its sods law something will happen if you dont take it out and £25 standard cover is not worth it for something that could be worth up to a grand.

Thats an eye opener then. I had a feeling it might be a bit of a nightmare trying to claim if the worst happened mind. I did have an issue the last time i used interparcel mind as they sent the rod to the wrong address. Fortunately a very honest polish lady phoned me as my number was on tube and i got in touch with the person it was ment to go to and they went to her house and collect the rod as it was the street around the corner with a similar address so i was very lucky there.

I've used UPS a couple of times for rods recently and have had no issues.

Ensure to use plenty of bubble wrap...especially the butt ring.
I had a set sent in carpet tube that was nearly impossible to dent but sure enough it had been stood upright at an angle in the corner of a van and a heavy object fell on it exactly at 50mm butt height crushing the tube in.
I could have cried for the seller when I had to send them back.

seconded, trying to claim is near impossible. They make you wait days, dont answer calls or emails, fob you off to the insurance company. Its literally impossible to get money out of them. Once they collect, your at their mercy.

Speak to any custom builder, they will tell you literally tens of issues where they were f****d over by couriers. They are the devil

I sold and shipped two sets of rods last year, used interparcel both times, about £30 tracked. Arrived on time and undamaged - got tracking updates all the way through.

Having said that, if you can wait until lockdown has eased, try to meet up with the buyer. I have previously done that - meet halfway kind of thing... anyway, some advice...

NEVER have them shipped late in the week - as they'll end up at a depot over the weekend, which is where they are most likely to get damaged. Best to ship them on a Monday or Tuesday.

Packaging? Really important. I used the original heavy duty packaging the rods came with when I bought them - I always keep the old tubes in the loft. I also bubble wrapped the entire length of the rod and put extra tubing inside around the tip ends. Mind you, no matter what you do, if they run over it with a forklift... mate of mine used to build rods... he's had that one happen a few times.

I worked in logistics for a number of years and would agree, couriers are the worst. Claiming on insurance? I've successfully claimed on a number of occasions - that was B2B though and I had leverage of future business being withdrawn. You need to check the small print carefully - often certain items are excluded and fishing rods is a common one - what makes me cringe is they'll still take your money for insurance, even when it's not covered! If you claim, best case would be they'll pay the premium back. So, up to you, but most times it is a waste of time insuring anything with a courier.

One word I will offer you, Tuffnells. Do not use them, EVER. They are one of THE worst courier firms on this planet. I even saw CCTV footage of them loading one of our vehicles and goods were literally being tossed like javelins into the back of the truck. Even after showing their management a video of it, the driver kept his job. Next time he arrived on site, we didn't let him in! They lost a very big chunk of business as a result of their poor performance - bloody nightmare to deal with too.
Are you sure?
