i managed to shear the top fixings off my tripod last night doing a self take.
any recommendations for a decent new one ?

Depends really what you're using to take pics with. I've got one of these as I've got a decent DSLR and need something sturdy that doesn't wobble about -->tripod link

Can always go mental and get a Manfroto for loads a wonga lol.
Just checked, I'm a plumb, I've got a Zomei Q666c instead. Practically the same as the one I linked but a touch cheaper. The camera plate that fixes to the bottom of the camera and then dovetails to the tripod is made of plastic, reasonably heavy duty mind.

That tripod is available under loads of brands, it is decent
I prefer a sturdy bankstick tho, I actually use the ball head from that tripod on a short cygnet storm pole

They're a good bit of kit mate.
I used a single bankstick for years too, just that when you're fishing places with ground like concrete, a tripod is the one. Great for using with a deeper and greet for kicking back watching a movie in the bivv 👍

A digging stick is an essential item for me
I'm not keen on manfrotto tripods either, I'd go with 3leggedthing if I wanted better than the amazon special

I use the Hama traveller 117, but changed the head to one with a QR plate, I think they do now do a model with a QR plate ( 163 off the top of my head) I leave mine out in all weathers it's a few years old now and still works a treat

I have just gone back over to a single bankstick and one of those Gardner 'Camera Angle' things, the amount I catch no point lugging a tripod about however small

If it's a low to mid priced DLSR, then a small Velbon is all you need for fishing. Amazon has them. If it's a smaller camera, you might get away with a bank stick, but hard ground in summer wont help. I actually use my Manfrotto 190XPRO with my Canon 6D if I have the barrow, it doesn't weigh all that and is super stable when it is windy - else I use the cheap little Velbon with my M50 when I am day fishing. It folds down small enough to tuck into the bankstick pocket of my rod sling. I 100% fish on my own, so the tripod is essential - if I forget it (have done that), then I have managed by using a low chair, just sitting the camera on that. I never, ever, let anyone take pictures for me - they'll **** them up or worse, do you really want people to see what your catching? Nope!

I've found the bankstick to be the next best thing after my 190go, which is just a bit too heavy and bulky for fishing. The cheap alu ones like the 7dayshop jobbie are fine for self takes, but if you have any interest in photography it isn't long before you want to do night time long exposures. This is when the cheap tripods don't seem to cut it in anything more than a light breeze.
I keep a cheap platypod knockoff in my bag too in case I forget my stick/head/qr plate, really handy widget
