depends on what model ? they made more than one but all of them will work further than you could ever cast

The echo sounder on the first one didnt work as far as you could cast. Got my money back as per guarntee, but he was far from happy about it

I seen a you tube video on the viper and the chap suggested not pulling your aerial out fully and leaving the last 4 inches or so retracted so to speak, then send our you bait boat till it looses signal, the pull out the final bit of aerial and bring back in....
Or tie you bait boat to a rod, go full steam till it looses signal. Mark you line and reel the boat back in the use distance sticks to measure, or do the same but tie a stone to the line with pva string, drop the stone like its your rig and wind in putting slight tension on your line and this will also remove any line twist you might have...
On a more serious note I'd say 200 min - 300 yards max...
