Does anyone have any recommendations for reliable and sensibly priced van hire for a French trip?

The larger brands - Enterprise etc - dont tend to offer European hire, or didnt when I asked.
Google some smaller local outfits.

europcar were the cheapest I could find. They allow them to France but its an extra. The vans were all within a couple of years old but the tires were in awful condition.

Definitely local independent companies, never had any joy with the big boys. There are usually a few in most areas.

I don't know how it compares in price to other companies as I've never hired a van but I have seen monster particles advertising European van hire. Might be worth a shout checking their website out

When I looked it was very very expensive from them, about double what I've paid in the past (although that was years ago last time I hired one for France)

Is it not as simple as just hiring a self drive van for a week, circa £300 + fuel?

Budget/Avis were the cheapest I found however I don't think they are allowing their vans abroad at the moment.

You'd need the correct paperwork to show proof of European insurance, also the hire company would add euro breakdown cover for the trip and also ensure the required parts are in the van like warning triangle, spare bulbs etc.
If you didn't declare it and get stopped you may get in trouble with police and maybe customs if you can't prove you're allowed to take it out the country
