As long as you have balanced gear and room to play the fish you can lamd anything within reason. Personally my best (or worst depending how you look at it) was a 44lb catfish on 8lb line and a 1.75lb rod - took a while to get that in.

Never used line heavier than 12Ib. If there's no weed or snags I'll go down to 8

The breaking strain relates to the weight that is applied to it before it snaps. You're not directly "lifting" a 21 lb carp. The rod absorbs the shock and the clutch if used allows line to be taken.

There are records set for catching large fish on stupidly low breaking strain lines but you normally have to play a fish for ages to get it in.

I would suggest that the best course of action is to use a line that allows you to get the fish in as soon as reasonably possible and that tackle losses are kept to a minimum.

I use 12lb breaking strain as I fish a number of different waters over a season and some require long casts and generally the lower the breaking strain, the further it will cast. Some will use higher breaking strain lines as they are heavier and will sink better. I do drop down to 10lb for my floater fishing but won't go below that.

You'll realize how strong 12lb line is if ever you have to pull for a break 😳

I only use a good 12lb line mate, as said don't play it like a noddy and you'll pull in wappers on it 👍🏻
