My mate recently brought a aerlex xtb spod reel and the bail arm keeps closing on the cast. I find it hard to imagine that spod reels are not like penns that lock when open. Is this a faulty reel ( bail arm feels not very firm on the spring ) or design fault .

If you don't open the arm in a certain place i have had it happen.I open the arm and if it does not feel locked open I flick the anti reverse and move the arm back and he should feel it drop back a bit more.I hope that makes sense and helps

I had a look for him and spotted the same. I own shimano lc mediums and to me their almost the same reels. I don't own a spod reel but use my penns. but for a dedicated spo d reel you would expect a anti close mechanism on the bail arm.

Do exactly the same, almost has to be underneath compared to normal!

Frustrating but you get used to it.

me and a mate both bought these reels years ago. both had the bail arm snap shut on a cast first time out.

figured out how to position it and do it without thinking now. never had a problem since.
