I have xtd 5500 and not a massive fan of them, look nice bit functionality is not the best. What are my options for a solid replacement? Maybe something a bit older Shimano wise as not liking the new quality, have looked at Penn affinity and esp onyx any good? Any other options? About £100-£150 per reel.

had the 14000 xtd's, also thought they were crap. Now i have the xtc 14000 cI4's, And they are they best reels I have ever had. Such a difference in quality, much better line guard (that doesnt break).
I also own 5500 ci4 xtc, but the 14000 are even better, and also very light. 14000 is only 540 grams

Bit of the price range just a tad. Did you find the line wraps under the spool of the xtds?

Yeah its a common problem with line getting under the spool. I'm actually in exactly the same situation as you, looking to replace the xtd's. I'm looking at either the emcast 25 or castism 25 from Daiwa. You could also stick with shimano and upgrade to the ci4's.
