Hi all
I am looking to buy 3 12" 3lb rods and 3 big pit reels. As I live in Ireland my venues are very limited. I presently fish two venues.
One is a two acre membership based day ticket water where the fish are in the 8 to 15 range. The other is a private half acre pond which we stocked. The fish here are 6 to 12. Because of this I have been using 2.2 barbel tods to keep it fun. I have now decided to take the plunge and fish and fish a venue where the Irish record was caught. It is less than ten miles from my home. Which is convenient. But with 30 plus acres and bigger albeit low stocks of fish. As the rods will only be needed for this possible soul destroying water. I don't want to spend too much money. I have been looking at the new Sonik vader x rs rods and reels. And the wychwood riot rods and reels. I have a budget of 280 in mind any ideas

If I were you I would have a look around and pick up a decent second hand set of Rods and Reels, always loads going that aren't abused. The Sonik rods are OK, but you would pick up something a lot better used.

I agree with what you are saying and I buy second hand where possible. My only real place to buy second hand is ebay. The problem is getting a private seller who will or can post a six foot parcel to Ireland without breaking the bank.....what rods would you recommend I should be looking at

Hi Derm, I know the venue your alluding to. I would have fished it back in the early 90s for Pike.
I'd happily fish it with the 2.2s but if you want 3lbers the Tackle Box's Darenth Valley rods get great reviews.

That's the official size. There have been bigger fish caught and not claimed for fear of the munchers getting to hear of it. They are in The Shannon system now,how long before they arrive in Lough Ree or Lough Derg
Anyone fancy some real Carpy adventures? Lough Ree is only 26000 acres

I'm not too sure as yet. The fish stocks were so low that I avoided it. They added new stock the year, nothing big. But enough to give you a chance of a bite........what are you thinking?

I used to do some serious bream fishing along lough ree just below lanesborough, below the road bridge and down past the kids playground.
It could become an epic carp water.

Dont bother with proper budget big pits, the riots are horrible reels and they wont last if you are putting them through their paces. Like with a lot of budget gear in the long run they cost you more because they need replacing. Personally I would use the money you have to buy one or two rods/reels and use your current rods at the ranges you are comfortable with. You can then upgrade over time.
Penn affinity is still ‘budget' to most but seem to get good reviews. Shimano XTD's are a similar price although the penns get better reviews. Both will cast well with the right rod and are around £100 new.
As for the rods that will really depend on what distance you are looking for.
