I had a long conversation with a Pest control manager of a leading Firm and is an expert on the poisons they use
and a few facts that might surprise these people with vivid imaginations
Concerning the baited mouse boxes I always use and recommend ( he says they are the perfect answer and sadly there is not a Rat equivalent )
1 .........if a mouse thats been killed by the baited box then gets eaten by anything else cat dog bird etc it wont kill them !!
the mouse just needs to LICK the bait not eat it ! and its pretty much instant thats why one box can kill up to 50 mice
2......The mouse boxes wont do anything to a rat
3 .....ANY Rat poison that is used outside needs to be eaten for between 10 and 14 days to kill a rat its very slow acting
AGAIN the dead rat will not kill anything else if it then gets eaten !!
if the law allowed a fast acting rat poison to be used outside then the dead rats would be a danger but its against the law and you cant buy anything like that

Rat and mouse poisons are anti-coagulants and they kill by causing internal bleeding that leads to a long and lingering death. Break neck traps are swift and efficient and the dead animal can be retrieved at the place of death and binned out of harms way. If a mouse has crawled to a nest under your house to die, the house will stink and you will be ripping up floorboards! With poison you always have the risk of young children or non target species taking the bait whereas I use chocolate or cheese. You still have to be careful and place the traps in places that other species can't reach as young fingers could easily be broken if they set one off. I'll stick to my traps.

If you put a mouse box down and you dont have mice at the time, will it still be a working poison and how long is it active for?

Ive got two of those in my tackle shed, little bleeders ate through my course landing and keep net..... Before I got the mouse box things .........My shed is wooden and they chewed through a knot in the wood on the floor .... It was the only hole in the shed about the size of a 10p piece..... I've since shoved wire wool in the hole and made a repair and touch wood haven't had any rodent issues for nearly 1 year.....
Most of my neighbours have got cats and I stupidly thought this would keep them at bay..... As the feckers are always in my garden doing there thing.....it drives my dog nuts and he spends many an hour "on guard" looking through the window and barking his tits off when they walk along the top of the fence.....
I have o make a big noise every time I let the dog in the garden so scare the cats away or to at least give them time to jump up onto the fence before he goes bounding out.....

Exactly the same here, dog goes bananas, especially when I let him out to greet them! He actually does that cartoon wheel spin on the kitchen floor till he gets going

As in a previous post I use the traps and have snared 5 in 3 weeks, the only way I believe they could have got in to the shed is underneath the door as there was a gap of about 15mm I have now blocked that up with a piece of chequer plate I had 👍

Thanks for the information, I suspected as much tbh as I have used the bait method for years in my garage and loft. We have 6 cats and never had any ill because of eating poisoned mice.

Cleaned shed out to find both bivvies with mice holes in each one! Bloody creatures!! Done an interesting repair myself with the damaged bivvy bag and aqua seal glue

you cant get the bait out of the box ! as explained they dont eat it its pretty much instant they only need to LICK IT !! and either die still inside the box or within 3 feet of it
they cant crawl away under your floor boards lol only in your imagination this happens we are talking about tackle sheds anyway ?
as far as stinking goes with mice nope ! with rats yes with mice they just dry up very fast go like a stone and dont smell

For what it's worth, I use Reece's peanut butter cups on my mouse traps and it works amazingly well. Always get a mouse or 3 a year in the garage, as soon as I see any evidence I lay 3 traps, in a couple of days they're all gone.
