So im all prepped for spring - new line on the reels, rigs tied, hookbaits boosted and primed..... hmmmmm
In search or something else to avoid more board games, im looking at a set of rods and wondering how difficult it is to replace the handles...
Harrison rods with very worn full duplon.... if i can source the bits mail order, how difficult is it to a) remove existing duplon handle (even if i just do reel seat backwards - im assuming that makes it easier...?) and b) fit new duplon handles.
bearing in mind the following restrictions - at best 'moderate' handyman skills and limited patience in such matters - am i likely to make a nice pair of rods with iffy handles into a dogs dinner!?!?

Easiest method to do would be to lightly sand the Duplon so it's nice and smooth then remove butt cap [place rod butts in hot water then prizeof with a blunt knife] Then order some jap shrink tube (Tackle box do it) and place over Duplon then heat down with a hair dryer leaving a overlap at butt then tuck back in then fit butt cap - End result looks good and you end up with a more durable handle.

I did it from the reel seat backwards mate and it looked a pig, your forcing it up the blank and it stretches The duplon and feels horrible mate.

Thanks all... i may look at going down the shrink wrap route, i have some other wands that have had full shrink wrap added and its a nice, hard finish..... i guess this is the type of work most rod builders would try and avoid.
As for camo wrap... not sure im high enough up the wannabe chart to go that route!

You probably wont get the butt cap out with hot water , i heat all mine up with heat gun gently rotating the blank and prise out with flat screwdriver. Take the duplon off it will be a ***** finish left on.its easy to get off with stanley blade , then sand blank with fine sandpaper.you can then get jap shrink right up to reel seat , heat from reel seat end slowly so you get it tight up , dont forget to cut pieces longer than you need then as stated tuck butt end into blank araldite butt cap in if too loose but if anything it will be a nice tight fit.Dont use superglue it isnt waterproof.any probs give us a bell,and i will talk you through it .

Thanks... down the road to this solution.... i tried sanding the duplon but they were quite out of shape in places with a few small holes and rips, so i thought shrinking over the top might not look great, plus it would be a larger diameter than the reel seat so not be easy to finish.
The butt caps came off ok with a 10 second dip in boiling water and a blunt knife..... the duplon - well after 30 mins or so chipping and scraping i questioned what i had started, but after an hour or so on each rod ive nearly got all the adhesive off and ordered some shrink tube, collars and caps from Guides n Blanks.

Butt caps must have only been super glued in , like i said you cant fir shrink over duplon it would look awful , yeah i suppose its a bit scary if you have not done it before , nice one 👍
