Hi all. I've moved to Slovakia in the last year , I have a ticket on a few lakes here but they close from the 15th March till the 1st of June. Messed up I know . But Budapest is only a couple of hours from me. I know there are quite a few decent holiday venues there week bookings etc but looking for Venues I can just drop on for a couple of days , till my waters are open again. Long shot I know just wondered if any of you have fished over this way. Cheers In advance lew

Hi Lewis

If you don't mind driving in another direction you could try either Hejlov or katlov in the Czech Repulic. Both English speaking friendly with fish to 28 kilos.
Just after I left the region in 2011 many of the Hungarian lakes moved to being predator lakes to lengthen their seasons, certainly 3 I used visit went down that route. One being touted as a big fish public venue was Tiza, but that place is huge and you'd definitely need a guide to get you started on there
I'll email some old friends to see if I can get you any other relavent options.
You probably already know but lake Mara in Slovakia is quite the challenge with some beautiful wild linear mirrors, but no night fishing as I recall

Hope it helps

Best

Jon

Cheers for the reply mate a great help. Mara is about 30 mins from me but is also closed for the same period as the waters on my ticket . I do enjoy my predator fishing a lot . But the pike fishing out here not that great really. Lots of small fish and moving here from the fens is quite a disappointment . I've got go a lake called greens which is open all year round bar spawning time and I know the ballif and it is just outside Bratislava so will give that a go . But will look a bit closer to lakes in czech. Cheers again mate lew

Bit late to party on this post, i live just south west of Budapest next to Lake Velence. There are tons of private and public lakes that offer good sport.

To fish here you'll need to get a tourist ticket, some places will arrange this for you others wont.

here are some lakes near me that I've either fished or looking to fish:

Keve Horgászpark - very easy runs water, some decent fish. great if you've only got a day or 2. Bivvy only.

Battyan carp lake - Very "man made" but some beasts to catch. there's a 30kg+ sturgeon that i had my eye on but after 7 days didn't manage it. lodges to rent with beds, heating etc. also Bivvy spots.

Lujza majori halastó - Beautiful lake with some fair fish. the owner is just in the process of building some stunning lodges but at the moment its bivvy only. this is one of my favorites.

Don Carp Lake - ive got a membership but not fished here yet. ive seen some big fish on the facebook page.

Pátkai Víztározó - big reservoir with some nice fish. public water which you can get 24/48 hour or yearly ticket. i spent last weekend here and saw some awesome wildlife and had a few decent 5-8kg mirrors. they get up to 30kg here but this is a big water so . . .

Lake velence - i would avoid this at the moment, its very hard to catch anything over 5kg without prebaiting and a boat. lovely wild places to fish but difficult in my opinion.

Lake Balaton - not been this year yet but obviously its the place for carpers visiting. plenty of places offering fishing holidays or you could get a ticket from any of the local Horgaszbolts and bivvy up.

Fehérvárcsurgói víztározó - never fished it myself but its on the list this year. im told all the good spots are 200m+ so a boat is definitely needed.

Never too late mate. As you know at the moment can't hop the border so stuck here in sloavakia. Being doing so was about on some bits of the river Hron and seem some nice spots. Also done a couple of the private venues as it's closed season here and have funny rules that you can only fish certain venues. My ticket starts again in the 1st of June so will be back on my local lakes. Cheers for the info will defiantly look into it further. Tight lines and hope you bag a banger
