Just a quick question. I'm having a few problems at work. And been advised to join the union to get a rep. It's only £11.50 a month. Are any of you guys belong to the union ? And is it worth joining ? Any info would be good thanks.

I'd always recommend to be in a union.

I've had problems in my last employment but fortunately I was already in the union.

However regards representation you can take anyone with you into any meetings.

Ensure that you note times and dates down that you're experiencing problems in the workplace along with names that are giving you the problems.

Edit - Unions also have other incentives too such as access to free legal advice etc etc.

Unions get a bad name when they call unnecessary strikes but they can be very worthwhile when you need to be represented during meetings. Your employee must follow guidelines and your rep will make sure they are followed and you are treated fairly.

My old man was a big union man and first thing he told me to do when I started work was “join the union” well I can honestly say the AUEW did absolutely **** all for me, particularly remember back in the 80s the company was offering 7% the union demanded 9% so we went on overtime strike and the non union members got double overtime, the firm held out with the 7% and the union held out for 9 and the TUC settled on 5% .....

Yes that's not good Jim and rightly so it's given unions a bad name but I still think a proper well informed union rep can be useful when you're dragged into a meeting. I'm talking about a sensible educated rep not one of those loud mouth commies with a chip on his shoulder. If you do get the sack sometimes they arrange a confidentiality agreement to make it easier to get another job

Our rep was a great one for banging on about how he can't afford beef how he can't afford to go for a drink, blah blah blah...and his missus would pick him up in a brand new car, he went into overdrive when they started laying off the engineering shop, overtime bans, go slows, work to rule, all the usual disruptive stuff,but the simple fact was that technology meant the industry had to change to electronic (Crane safeload systems) I was okay as I was an electronic wireman but the turners and millers got laid off, he went on to become a vicar😂
