Can anyone recommend any places in and around Southampton that are free to fish ideally or cheap venues took my son on are first carp fishing trip to broadlands over the weekend, both had a fantastic time and now want to do more

Took my sons fishing at Headlands (lower lake) when they started. You could also look at Whinwhistle and Longbridge, both nearby.

Thanks I will definitely be giving these places a go, I take it boilies are the common bait on the lakes... And float on the river Itchen? Sorry for asking but totally new to this

Best advice i can give, track down Newlands Angling. (Newlands Farm) Small farm, pretty lake vaguely between Newgate Lane, Fareham and Stubbington. Slightly outside Southampton but well worth the drive. Lots of carp around the 10lb mark. One of the best floater fishing lakes in the area (you will have to research floater fishing - but your son will find it very exciting) Great for somebody new to angling.
If you keep scrolling down the UK venues you will find a very good thread on it, where I tried to give as much info as I could. Thread was called "Tanners lane lakes Farham" circa August 2017. (Spelling for Fareham is wrong, but the wrong spelling will help your search on here!)
Also find the web site for Newlands Angling.
Once you have mastered that lake. Have a go at River Farm - good for carp to 30lb and fairly easy to catch. A bit of a muddy hole. River Farm is just up the Wickham road behind the Titchfield Mill pub/restaurant. Unfortunately they don't allow floater fishing - but if you do fish there CC Moore Live System 12mm boilies work there (get them from Poingdestres).

Southampton common is free but if you want your son to catch regularly I recommend FLE (formerly Greenridge lakes) in Ampfield, near Romsey. £10 per day and several lakes so you can choose whether to go match for smaller fish or carp up to 20lb+. The people who run it are very good at advising. tgry some of their pellet. theres a shop to buy bait etc but they are low on stock due to pandemic delaying deliveries so take some of your own.
