It depends largely what was going on for you at the time I'd say.
The late 80's were best times I've so far experienced, and to a larger extent for the wider community. Unfortunately, what those good times were built on was a foundation of lies and deceit, the deregulation of financial markets which was fostered by Milton Friedman and exported over here and elsewhere from Merica. It all looked wonderful on paper, champagne corks popping left, right and centre, only a few years later, poof and as if by magik, castles made of sand, it came a crumbling down, rinse and repeat.
All of this is why I'd say they're (governments) are all the same. Nothing gets fixed, words get waffled, papers shuffled, same old, same old unfortunately. Tiresome, muchly.
