I've got a set of QDX's. Prior to this I had a set of original 45QD's. I have had a few big pit style reels since leaving the Shimmy 8010 baitrunners behind - original Biomaster Titanos GT, original Shimano Longcasts, Daiwa Inifinity 5500'(twice), Shimano Technium 10000XT and as mentioned the two types of Basia's.

All these reels are different in individual performance, perhaps longevity, aesthetics, weight, Baitrunner/ non Baitrunner, QD spools and price. If I had to pick the best of the bunch taking in account all the previously mentioned then the Technium XT 10000 stands head and shoulders above the rest. I sold them because I felt I had been lucky to have no faults with them, but if I ever did then the lack of spares would be a problem. Anyway, that's the position I'm coming from.

Re the Basia's. The original 45 QD's were fine. I had no problems with them at all. As mentioned on another post heavy rain could get grit under the spool but a quick wipe solved it. Slight bugbears were the clicking handle and the bright silver colour. Both of these were minor niggles which I knew about prior to buying them so it's just an observation rather than complaint. I swapped these with a bit of cash for the Techniums on here with Prutster 👍. I had them for quite a few years then got a bit paranoid about the spares situation, sold them and have regretted it ever since. With the cash I got I bought a set of Basia QDX. Exactly the same as the 45 QD's but in matt black. They looked better than the silver QD's but did wonder why Daiwa went to all the trouble of using magnesium aluminium alloy then paint them like a cheaper plastic reel That aside they are reliable, cast well, retrieve well with a good drag. With these my main criticism is that the Matt black paint is very fragile and easily scratches off and worse the undercoat is white. But as a fishing tool they are good.

A twist to the tale is that a few days ago I ordered a Penn Affinity 11 custom Carbon reel, as a fourth rod reel and general dogsbody. Inevitably I will be comparing it against the Basia. I got a very good deal so if I like them and can get 3 of them for the cost of 1 QDX then the Basia's may go and the excess cash put towards something else.

For clarity on use I'm retired so fish for 1 week a month, every month, spring, summer, autumn and winter.

I thought my ISOs where horrible compared to my services 6Ks which I did after a year due to speaking with Garry. The manufacturers reely do not assemble them very well. So I had my ISOs services after a year of having them and although Garry thought they where in extremely good condition and only upgraded the handle bearing and clicker they came back feeling fair better than they where originally.

Very interested to hear your thoughts on the Penn compared with your previous/current reels.

AS for my comments on Basias take it or leave it and ironically I spoke with another angler on my syndicate the other day whom was raving about my 6Ks offered to purchase them off me if I where to sell them he has owned 5ks for 20'years and has a second set and without my mentioning Basias he went on to recall experiences of people he knows that have had with them and referring in particular to a reel serving company that laughs at how they keep him in business.

Good luck anyway personally 7 years for a reel to burn out isn't for me along with the various other things I've heard from decent anglers each to their own.

I fish every other week most of the year, venues vary. I'd say they have been put through their paces. When I got them I was warned about the basias bending the main shaft so went for the ISO's.

Funny you should bring up bent shafts.

With both my Basia models I was worried about this, especially when seeing them being packed away in a vehicle on its way to France. Between the paranoid Basia owners and 50mm ring rod owners it was slightly comical. Also a simple precaution of making sure the spools were fully in the down position before packing them away for a trip where they are crammed in with loads of other gear isn't exactly rocket science, it's just good housekeeping with any reel.

My own particular Basia's never suffered, neither did any of my mates. However my second set of Daiwa Infinities which I bought second hand, 2 of them showed an off centre shaft. These reels are known for their toughness, often being described as ‘being built like tanks' which I readily agree with. I suspect that any damage like this is the down to the owner rather than the reel unless it is due to a genuine accident rather than abuse.

Also people tend to forget the only job of the oscillating centre shaft is simply to go up and down. Rotation, locking, bail arm operation are all functions of the rotor or bail arm mechanism. I sometimes think this simple operation gets magical type properties attributed to it.

It was my understanding that the shafts could bend on a hard cast, but like you said, making sure the spool isn't right out should prevent it. Might treat myself to some basias next time...

Indeed my belief and (let me spell it out for those on here) I'm not a great caster and yes I know people and have witnessed cast to 150 yards that a fellow angler achieved with camcads, I've owned plenty of reels and it's not difficult to research and handle and discuss what's good and what's not. A bailiff on my local water has hit 180 yards and bent the spindle of the basia and it was not the first time I had heard about this happening, as said take that as you will, linch me if you can't get your head around the basic fact that I provide evidence try and call me out. . I won't purchase them as I have absolutely no need to as I have a set of 6Ks I might one day get the Weston shaft as said good luck on whatever you go for as mention her many think they are good.

Funny how those that use them have no issues, but your “mates” have had loads.

Ive just googled “basia bent spindle”, researching as you say, and theres very little out there. Mainly posts by you, and a couple of people whos mates have had it happen.

And please explain to me the physics behind bending the spindle on a cast? sounds like utter bull**** to me.

Not sure why you feel the need to pipe up and give negative opinions everytime basias are mentioned, baring in mind youve never used them. Did a basia sleep with your wife?

Oh stop being such a moron, momentum, is the answer FD. Let me explain once again for you, i asked the question ten years ago and they opinions then where
Not good I've asked a few since then and still opinions where not good, I waited 15 years before getting ISOs options where superb, id rather a pair of 10k Shims however Shimano where clueless and dropped them. I truly believe you have missed everything said. Justify what ever you for it really doesn't bother me I have purchased the odd bit of rubbish myself.

So youre making sweeping judgements, based on what youve been told by people, who may be making stuff up themselves, with no personal experience of it, and im a moron. Problem with people that talk ****, is they dont like being called out for talking ****

Do you really believe that during a cast, there is that much pressure put on the spindle of a reel, to actually bend it? That is a serious theory right? More likely its happened in transport or hes dropped it, and then come up with the wonderful theory that its happened on a massive cast.

You expect people from to give your ramblings credit, yet were still awaiting the big reveal of this mystery tackle shop. Did they beg you not to say anything after telling you that? A look of regret across their faces, “oh no weve let 5the cat out the bag, what if he tells someone this massive secret”

And i dont need to justify anything ive bought. Ive been more than happy with mine, they are up for sale as i need the money for a college course, and im not using them. I will buy another set when i can afford to. I'm not one of these delusional people that think everything i own is amazing and everything else is rubbish. I have 5000ts, as far as reels go they are pretty awful to use, but they do a job i want them to do. I can wade out to cast, not worrying about them being submerged, drag them through bushes, leave them on the floor, reasons it bought them. I would never recommend them to anyone, unless they were going into a similar situation as im using them for. But i do actually own and use them, therefor my opinion is based on experience, not some nonesense someone heard from their mates dog once.

Let's face it since the likes of the Diawa SS 3000 5000T Shimano Tech XT original BIG bait runner the majority of reels are in comparison crap the increase in the use of aluminium plastic gears all supposedly due to weight saving but in reality it's down to money saving measures !! They will all perform well enough but as with most modern day products come back in 20 30 yrs time & see how many are still working !
Undoubtedly there are still a few that are better quality Shimano Stella Diawa Saltiga's Van Stsl etc but have no experience of these even they could be pony 😀

Why do do reel threads ALWAYS turn into a dick swinging contest 🤷‍♂️

To be fair basias and techs are far from crap, neither are their other models. Most reels now are technically much better than a 5000t/ss, let alone a basia or tech.
They build to a price point; if you want a car, phone, pc, tv. It's the same, ascending models of not quite as **** as the last but not ideal unless you buy the top spec. A logical improvement would be all brass or stainless gears etc, which they may have now for all I know. But I very much doubt it, it's just not worth it.

And ffs Basia spindles bend and the reels are crap he says, what reels have you got.. 6000t with a bloody great long spindle and spool

Technology has the fixed spool reel drastically changed in the past 50 yrs ? lighter faster retrieval but Crap as in the materials used in the gearing !! Quality has been sacrificed to save weight & money IMO especially when you compare them to some earlier ABU models like the Cardinals or the Suveran
Are you sure?
