I'm not sure that it is a nonsense argument to be fair. Shimano parts are made of a cocktail of different alloy's and steel variants, carbons etc that have been manufacturing items since 1921, considerably longer than Diawa which the former has become highly skilled at providing to customers with.

I've seen the reel that Bradders has in the flesh, and to be perfectly honest, aesthetically, it's not that pleasing to my eye. The gripe that I've heard mentioned on here about the XTC spool cap being plastic, the Diawa reel to my eye looks incredibly like plastic to me.

A guy on the place where I fish has Basiar's - not sure which ones -- apparently they're quite expensive from what I remember him telling me - they make a terrible noise; all creaking and whining as he turns the reel handle, and about 2 years old too so he mentioned. The guy uses them 3 nights a week, every week.

With all due respect to Bradders, he doesn't go out enough to be able to draw any conclusions as to how good they really are. I'm sure to him they look fantastic, the proof as they say is in the eating.

Some mentioned the likes of Peck and company using Diawa reels, it wouldn't surprise me that as soon as a reel starts playing up, a new one is sent out pronto, wouldn't look great publicity wise on a Korda DVD with a creaking, screeching top end reel would it?

Although I've got Techs myself which incidentally I think ar a fantastic reel, I've not got a dog in the race as to which is better or worse. If you want to buy top end Diawa, or similar Shimano's, if you can afford it, go for it.

But reel gearing in what carp anglers buy is generally cast crap and plastic, doesn't matter who makes it when it's all basically the same.
Funny, razorback on here has had basiairs (the original top spec model) for ages and they've been fine.
Every person I know with qda and qdx have had no more issues than any other reel of the same popularity.
I don't like the basia, it's too long with too long a stroke for my liking. I also don't like the 14k shimano, it's ridiculous.
As for what people at Korda use, I wouldn't know or care and would've thought you would be wary of jumping to conclusions after last time

Its probably safe to say that one anecdotal tale doesn't make the whole? Different anglers take varying degrees of care with their kit. You get some anglers that treat very expensive kit like absolute trash, and others mollycoddle their gear; I'm in the middle somewhere.

To be fair, I've not used the top tier Diawa's of today. Maybe the Magsealed lark is all that it's cut out to be. To my mind, it sounds more like sales patter. I've had my fair share of Diawa's over the years, on the whole, they are very good reels.

Youve said yourself that youve not been out for ages as you've had a stroke, no?

I am right in saying that the spool cap on yours is plastic, yeah? I would have preferred that Shimano would have made a titanium spool cap for the Tech. Possibly a titanium spool cap wouldn't have the same tone as a plastic one?

I remember talking to a guy that worked in a tackle shop bemoaning the cost of a bail arm for the Basiair's he had. I'm not sure which ones he had other than it wasn't your ones. The bloke said that he'd bent a bail arm and a replacement was £115, which to me seemed like Diawa were seriously taking the piss.

Just to reiterate: I really don't care for the my brand X reel is better than yours, it's just so tedious. I'm very happy with what I've got like I know you're very happy with what you've got.

Is there anyone on this forum that have personally had issues with basias, not just not liking them, but actual issues? I dont care if your mates had apparent issues, but actual first hand experience of the spindle bending etc? And im not talking about a bit of noise cause youve not kept them clean either

In my experience of the SLD Basia....they have the normal basia spool on them which means you only need it to rain hard whilst fishing and the bounce up of gritty rain will cause the terrible graunching noise most have heard of.
However if you remove the spool cap and wipe the top of the spool and the underside of the spool cap the problem goes away....a slight pita however not the end of the world.

The SCW on the other hand has the older style Tournament 5000 type spool drag so doesn't suffer with the same problem.

Only other problem I've encountered with the SLD is the wooden handles will not sit straight leading to complete ocd meltdown and replacement with Basiar handles in my case

And way back in the day when the original Basia came out the handles on mine used to make a clicking noise when reeling in.

I'd of said if you don't look after your stuff avoid Basias...however having seen Darryl Pecks close up it looks like he's been rubbing his with turds...go figure

99% of the problems people have are accidental damage or poor/zero maintenance with any reel.
A float reel could handle most carp fishing, just retrieves slowly and lacks line capacity/stores heavy line badly. When your main drive gear is made from dairylea triangles and the rest are PLASTIC you know it's not built to last.. so you go with what you think will be better supported with parts, which Daiwa do very well and I've found easier. And yes, if you're clumsy enough to bend something it'll cost you, whereas service parts are usually not too bad

And on the other hand, it makes me laugh all these newbies getting top end reels serviced every year

As long as you don't throw them in the lake every week, reels should last you years without being opened up, and opening them up to service them just risks dirt getting inside from a poor job and making them worse.

I've had my ISO's 15 years and they have been serviced once.

Shimano Ultegra xtc 14000 ci4 are very good reels getting good reviews from nearly everybody that uses them, I sold my basias to buy a set on recommendation and I'm very happy I did. Brilliant reels. I pocketed the change brought a new bivvy with the difference.

There is a set on ebay at the moment about £500, bargainl

Not trying to be a smart arse here, how often do you fish and what sorts of places do you fish. The point I was making earlier on which I'll expand here is that unless these things get a proper hammering, you can't really draw any great conclusions has to how great X piece of kit is. I mean, if you're hardly going and that when you go you fish waters of an acre or so, you're not really putting any strain on things, hence they'll last year's and years.

Maybe you're always out and my comments are moot

Agree mate. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Some reels just require a bit more care, like the basia spool needing a wipe; doubt letting that accumulate would be good in the long run.
If people are half sensible the only thing that should need replacing is gears, bearings, bushes and the odd worm drive.
Most big pit reels are just surf reels for distance casting and retrieving shrapnel on the beach anyway. You'd happily use an ss2600 or maybe 5000t for a tarpon, big bass etc. Not a basia or basiair
Amuses me when people say “they use them sea fishing”... yes, for 1lb whiting
Are you sure?
