I doubt anyone has actually said that though.
I started in 1980, I also think the 80s/90s were the v best time to be carp fishing, yet I'm still learning and v much value younger anglers advice.

For me it was better because you had to think out solutions rather than Google of buy your way through, that's a personal thing.
That said it's not just fishing, it's life - I could change carburettors, fix exhausts and tile a bathroom back in the day - now I check the oil and someone plugs it into a computer once a year and the tradesman with all the tools tiles better than I ever could.
Old school thinking still exists, it's just very short lived, as we are all internet addicts - any ingredient, chemical, cast, line, hook is googled as soon as spoken. You can't stop evolution and technology. The real down side is that most of the new urban bunch are such a load of arrogant sponsored dicks, that they start to believe their own hype - it's fishing, you are good at it and get free bait. You are not the next David Beckham of angling- you cuddle slimey fish, have a photo taken looking like a skateboarder and put them back....

I was very lucky in the 80s, as a ten year old I lived on a golf course. I had my own old estate lake to fish literally in my back garden. I fished it every day after school, one day my uncle came over who was and old school fisherman. He taught me more in one afternoon that I'd learnt in months on my own
