Had a wall built in the front garden. I put on the coping stones and resined the joints. Prior to the wall being built my daughter and us thought that a porcelain exterior tile would look nice. Spent £330 on tiles and around £70 on adhesive and grout. The blocks used are perishing and crumbling because there wasn't a damp proof course put in. The wall is now to come down as those dry rods that could be inserted to supposedly cure rising damp are not recommended. Once the wall is down ‘I'll be taking it down and to hopefully save the coping stones to sell for reclamation' my daughter does not now want a wall rebuilding as the costs would be too high considering the 5hit load of monies it currently costing to put the house right.
If there is one consolation then thank goodness those cowboys were sacked before they even got to tile it.
Had inspection cameras down drainage etc and there is broken pipes and a couple of pipes that connect to nothing but just simply spewing out toilet waste just into the ground. At the moment the drainage to put it right falls at just over £8,000.
Makes one want to vomit, but I ain't vomiting down those toilets in there......

It sounds like a gang of jobbing gypsies not builders I wouldn't give them the benefit of that title, about the same standard of workers my neighbour has employed you should see the latest attempt at a garden gym they're having a go at, I'll wait till its nearly complete and then ring the council to send round building control.

I've seen stuff down my road that I couldn't possibly accept.
Replacement bay window made up of a number of standard widows screwed to softwood posts, I say posts if you call a 4x2 a bay window post, the gable above really noticeably dropping on one side, looks awful.
A newly laid block paving drive with bumps and dips, wonky rainwater downpipes, builders throwing cement down the sewer and blocking it, cracked pattern imprinted concrete drives.
Replacement fence panels done poorly, I'd thought that would be difficult to get wrong but a so called fencing company managed it.
Most of the **** work is cosmetic but it seems the home owners are either oblivious or think the workmanship is acceptable.
Far too many unskilled people masquerading as tradesman, their work so poor it even makes some proper tradesmen having to drop their standards to keep competitive.
For the last few years I've been wanting to have a cobble stone driveway but concerned that local companies haven't got the skills to do a first class job. Most companies are only capable of chucking blocks on sand and running a compactor over them, often using cheap labour to cut costs.

To be honest I wouldn't know if that's 5h1te or not but it's not looking too good to me.
Edit - Its disgusting and don't know how they sleep at night. The father in law had tears in his eyes to witness such shocking work as he's a retired builder and said that if he was 25 years younger ‘now 83' then he'd have done everything.
Makes me sick.

It's unbelievable what you do see.
If you google in building trade tolerances allowed you'll see some pretty awful images, even on new build houses.

Proper cobbles can be a right mare of a job, granite setts are a cheaper and easier job.
I had to try and patch in a square meter ish in a belgravia mews with re-claim cobbles. some of em were over a foot long, others about 4 inches, I could see why Murphy decided to tarmac the hole instead

I went straight into construction from school 1987 and have been involved with the industry ever since, we had an old dear living next door for eighteen years I used to cut her grass, clear the snow, pop to the shops for her she was the best neighbour you could wish for then she died and the house got sold.
It needed a lot of work as it was pretty much the same as it was in 1963 when the houses were built, a young eastern european family have bought it the day they moved in I was replacing the flat roof over the garage, Dana the father introduced himself we had a chat he seemed a decent sort he started asking who had done my monoblock drive, windows, roller shutter door on the garage etc.... he said as we were going to be neighbours it was nice to meet and he would probably call on me for some contacts as they were all mostly people I know in the trade then off he went, within a week there were footings being dug in the rear garden to extend the kitchen that's when the fun started he was using labour that were coming there after work and banging and jack hammering until midnight, I let it ride for a week but the straw that broke the camel's back was the jackhammer starting up at 6.30am on a sunday morning, being semi detached our walls were vibrating so I threw a pair of shorts on went round to his door which was open I tried knocking first then shouting but they couldn't hear me so I went on in and ripped the plug from the wall.
The concrete posts and kicker in the photo with the plastic panels I put up when Anne was alive had it all level lovely, he has dug that close to it that he undermined the kicker board hence why it's all dropped we've had a few run ins now, the extension over the garage and the gym started back December he's had about four different lots of blokes have a go at it so far not one of them with any building experience obviously I even thought about moving last year, if it's not workmen until midnight its four screaming kids and a yapping dog.

There was a bloke called Cookie Wales that used to lay cobbles, his work was breath taking, always in heavy demand but he had to give it up because of failing health. Now he was someone I would've trust
Take your point about the setts but even then I'd be nervous about who'd be doing it.
Done a few patios in the past, might of considered doing setts myself if it were a few years back but getting old and weary nowadays.

Why pay good money for the doors and do that crap for the structure??
Garden offices have been a pretty lucrative market since covid, some I've seen are no better than that but look pretty nice once the cladding goes on, wouldn't fancy being in one in a storm tho

There's been an explosion of jack of all trade cowboys in the last couple of years, the sort that will quote absolutely anything including electric and plumbing, no experience, no insurance etc etc.
The same goes for these ****s that are doing tip runs etc, again no license, no insurance etc half of it gets fly tipped.
