Remember how everybody would swear by a certain make or flavour back then as though their life depended on it. And how word would spread that a bait had 'blown', wrecking your confidence and causing a hunt for the next magic flavour. The variety of boilies chosen by this small census has proved that to be the bunkum it was.

My first boilies were, I think, trout pellet flavoured and I used them for barbel instead of my usual paste. But I know I had Richworth Tutti's around that time too.

We used to go up to Marks house and collect it, he is/was just up the road from me near Savay. He used to roll it in his shed I think 😄

Squid & Octopus/Premier Ginger.

Nash whisky ready mades caught me far more fish than I was expecting, that flavour has been a firm favourite in my own baits for years since.

Also Richworth strawberry jam...great bait for me, but only the frozen version

First boilie I can remember catching on well as a youngster was Duncan Kay's vanilla bean, had loads out on them, well seeemed to be loads

I think my first boilie caught carp was on a Duncan Kay's Golden Pheasant boilie,
Richworths Tuttis ruled the roost for a while in the world of shelf life's & mix wise I quite liked solars Neptune mix & nutrabaits enervite & enervite gold.

Lovely sweet smell when you opened up the bag too.... yum!

I used to have a thing for Nash Formula 1, other than that...

and the bait i still use Essential B5

I think in the 80s as a teenager the first boilies I used were Wild Cherry and Tutti Frutti, probably Richworth.
I loved the smell of them and would often nibble on a few of the Wild Cherry on the bank.

We then used some homemade ones until I came back to carping proper about 20 years ago when I remember using Maple 8 with a string of hook baits sat in the bottle of glug as well. Used them on my first French trip in 2005 to catch my first 20.
Also tried Tangy Squid but couldn't get any luck with it so moved on to Source.

Nowadays I mostly use small popups rather than the donkey-chokers of years gone by.

All the old flavours seemed to be more about catching the angler than fish
