Im with heff, its his money so if he wants to spend 10 grand on a top notch set up then let him. Its dosent affect anyone else. He might be minted no one knows and 10k is a mere drop in the ocean. If i was just starting out i would also want the best of the best.

dont buy cheap rods or any tackle to be honest! even if dont like it i will just try again with something else! may be crazy or stupid but have to have the best stuff i can!
ip100 money aint problem really! just got my buzzers fox rx+ 3 set and pick up x3 daiwa tournament 20 basia qd in morning! just asking what peoples thoughts was on best rods ( yes i may not get the best from them but will make me feel better sitting behind some awsome rods

I see them as a set of tools that I use and enjoy. I have 3 sets of rods dependant on where I fish, if I can get away with it or happy to use single hook baits then my 2.5lb TC Torrix with a set of ISOs and are a joy. PVAs and greater flexibility a set of 3.25lb Torrix and 6K tournies and a pair of Harrison 13' Balisters which I use for longer range work or spodding and markering.
Based on your Reel choice imho may I suggest you try 12' 12.6 and 13' id probably learn toward a set of thirteens. For me I've questioned why I have all these then again it's been over a thirty five year period.
I'm not saying you need multiple sets of rods may I ask have you any particular type/size of water lined up?

jslinn thanks for info on setups! i dont think its crazy having that many setups as its what you injoy! iv got 13 course/match rods all daiwa tournament or slr and 2 free spirit rods! all tournament reels and 6 fishing poles! daiwa air z pro and browning exo sphere that cost mint! but aiint counting the pennies as what i like!
im thinking of linear fisheries as day ticket and good stock but to be honest i like the big pits and large waters like Holme fenn! im not really into all these high pressure waters where the angler next door is smoking a spliff lol
id much rather wait for 1 big carp than have number of 20s

A 20 is a big carp. Especially if you've not handled one on your own before.
You've pretty quickly moved from reading about rods to hopping on Holme fen after 40s and 50s.

I hadn't handled a 20 before I caught one nor a 30 if you have had plenty of tench bream and smaller carp then imho should be fine with larger fish, just be gentle.. I'd like to catch a 50 and have the potential to do so on one of the waters I still planning on fishing I can't practice holding one prior to catching one.
By all means be prepared and have decent sized mats etc.it is worth noting though that a landing net with a collapsible spreader block is imo essential for larger fish.

No it's not, one set was purchased of my selling 2/3 of my inheritance of my Grandfathers Trout and Salmon gear I kept the rest once I retire from carp fishing I a decade or so.
It will be interesting to hear what Rods you like/purchase.

You need to be confident, not gentle.
I'm not talking about how heavy a fish is. Pretty sure locals on Holme fen and the like would be really chuffed if a newcomer accidentally dropped or tethered a big fish because its all a learning curve isn't it?
And rods... there's no point buying high end with attributes you don't actually understand yet. Buy the best by all means if you can afford it, but 3-4k for your first set up is bonkers

I am assuming he has been fishing for sometime and he's not new to
sport, for all I know this guy could go shark fishing.

I would recommend seriously considering going down the second hand route. Carp fishing has always been a rotisserie of gear with people chopping and changing gear for no practical reason whatsoever. As such, there's some great bargains to be had on the second hand market if you've content with (a) not owning the latest model and (b) not bothered about using the most in-vogue rod spec. For example, I regularly see the older Century and Harrison model rods for between £50 - £125 each on ebay.

I really think you are missing the point, why do people wear 100k watches or iPhone cases covered in diamonds. Out of my reach and maybe off point here's another example I could buy a black and decker drill or a Dewalt or a Hilti. I believe the Hilti to be the best I may only need it for putting a few screws in and like shoes I invest my money wisely and buy quality knowing from all sorts of examples that in the most part paying for good quality equipment usually pays for its self in the long term.
I have seen people like to look of a particular CD player a well liked brand, auditioned it and willingly spend 12 grand on one, in one instance a particular lady bought her son one as well.
