There is still one firm going that had the original contract and still makes them. You still see the original ones on eBay in obscure sizes ( 28” waist 36” leg etc), but this company has the full size range.

The German army grey moleskin trousers are nice and very comfortable. I have worn them for years. I used to get them from German soldiers themselves back in the days of when I was in the BAOR and well before the days of flecktarn.
But, there are better alternatives these days that last longer. The problem with moleskin is, it shrinks, virtually every wash they get tighter round the waist even in a cold wash. Eventually they end up unwearable. I used to have to get them two sizes too big. I got my last pair about 8 years ago and just save them for best and doubt I will ever buy another pair.
Also they wear thin very quick where they constantly flex like
on the laps and thighs, eventually you end up with holes in them.

Jack & Jones combats, Ebay £20, even do them in Camo! Super comfy and very stretchy!

No secret squirrel at all. I just need to find the exact bit on a website I haven't visited for a while.. I didn't initially want the hassle of digging it all out if no one was interested ( which often happens)👍

Ok, found the receipt I was looking for. I couldn't remember if it was a UK or German company, it's UK as it happens.

I don't recognise your description as my experience. Like you I got my first pair whilst in BAOR and loved them.
Yes, like any high cotton content trouser there will be some shrinkage - just think high quality cotton jeans, be careful with your sizings but these come in alternate waist sizes. I get a 37 inch waist when I am normally a 36. Just like denim jeans the fabric tightens up when initially washed but relaxes when worn, to the extent that they stretch to fit your body contours. It is the tight weave construction which makes them so good.
I have never experienced them wearing out any faster than any other garment, if anything they outlast my other gear. They are extremely tough. They also feature a high waist so they don't let your shirt slip up, all the buttons are covered so they don't catch on undergrowth etc, they even have little sewn eyelet holes under the crotch for ventilation and feature ankle ties.
No one trouser covers every situation. Lightweight poplin type trousers are great in summer but freezing in winter and rip easily. Heavyweight lined trousers are warm but make you sweat like a pig in summer and weigh a ton when wet, high nylon content make them feel slick. As I initially said - IMHO these are the best ALL ROUND trousers for the UK weather scene.
These are 10 years old and the only wear is on the pocket edges which is par for the course.
I did notice that the material colour has changed a bit between the years with the older ones being a bit more green and the later ones a bit more brown, but the same weight fabric. This could be just a particular batch though, plus they haven't faded as much.
