Reason for the steel price increase is that China opened up factory's before everyone else and subsequently they started buying up all available steel. Add that to the fact that a large amount of mills are working on skeleton staff, production levels are much lower than normal.

From my understanding that was due to the new Chinese owners wanting to improve efficiency. I could be wrong but I think most of those made redundant were office based not actually involved with the production side.
Also worth noting that most countries have a reducing steel industry due to competition from China and India.

Bankers backing the British steel industry going bust is the major threat. Now we've "taken back control" state aid or re-nationalisation won't be far away. Monty Johnson's Flying Circus will be on the case soon surely.

This is off topic but I think we have every right to whinge. So far from my point of view there hasn't been any benefit and as someone who works within the EU, it's shafted me and a huge range of businesses.
There was a range of promises given that just haven't and won't be delivered. The 300 odd million a week for the nhs that hasn't materialised comes to mind. Issues for UK companies exporting items to the EU is another.

There's shortages for many good coming from China, it's across the board. So prices are no longer being discounted.
I think we'll never know the truth about what's happened in China with Covid but if we believe what their saying that there is no Covid issue then why are the supply chains so messed up?....

Is steel supply not vital to UK PLC? Chairman Mao would have loved to buy the British steel industry and shut it down
