I'm not sure I particularly agree with having to set an example. Most of the guys you see are just general blokes, who just fish and get a bit extra on the side. They're not role models, general safety when growing up should be taught by parents, and schools, not some bloke who goes fishing. Let's be honest, if you want to look at probably the most famous angler of all John Wilson, he was bobbing around lots of times on a boat, without anyone really having an issue with it, well that's my view anyway

Think we'll have to agree to differ on that. There has been several high profile cases of angler deaths in boat incidents. The minute you are in the limelight you have a duty to set a good example. Many young and inexperienced anglers watch the films etc and copy what they see. How many youngsters do you see copying footballers. Same in our game. Many anglers parents etc are not interested in fishing so people need role models. Some of these guys make reasonable money and get free stuff out of what they do, the least they can do is be good role models.

I think there is a difference between football and fishing, most lakes that I've ever fished wont have anyone unaccompanied under the age of 16 on their lakes. So by that, then we are talking about young ish adults, i reckon by that point in their lives they know what they should be doing, regardless of what they have seen.

Beg to differ. In my experience some people in that age bracket have not much regard for safety in many cases. Look at the death rates from car accidents in that age group. There is good quality research to prove that the risk awareness part of the brain takes time to develop. Particularly in males it doesn't in many cases mature until mid 20s. Either way people in the limelight have a duty to set a good example.

Also they are role models to many young and older people alike. Many people follow the trends these guys set. Only gotta look at the clothes many of these younger anglers wear etc. Look also at the melee over Terry Hearns recent book if that's not people looking up to an idol then I don't know! Most of the top anglers are in fairness excellent role models.
