Its all very well people banging on and on about 15lb line on a river for medium sized fish, but that fact is that modern 15lb premium line is absolute complete and utter cross channel ferry towrope
12lb Synchro is indestructable in normal fishing use
The actual BS of it is about 19lb for goodness sake
12lb is markedly nicer to use than 15, much better casting accuracy and finesse with light leads
Do yourself a favour - trust in materials more and don't feel the need to go ''macho''
I know serious deep sea anglers who use 12lb line - the reason is so they can use more finesse rods - and the other reason is it never blooming breaks

Not sure how you fish but 'Finess' is not a word in my dictionary. I just wang it in and hope for the best
I tent to fish rivers with a heavy lead and never find any tow with 15lb, also the GT80 gives me a bit more confidence should there be a snag or anything that requires a little more grunt.

I know where you're coming from, I've fished for barbel on the Trent and Severn for over 40 years and used no more than 10lb in mono. This thread is clearly about fishing for barbel on carp gear. Nothing wrong in that

12lb line casts far better than 15
and the flow makes a huge difference between 12 and 15 in either river or sea
some people need to get out more, 12lb modern line is RIDICULOUSLY strong (when I was young and broke I used the same spool of 12lb shimano technium on a rough big carp club lake for three seasons, fishing in terms of MONTHS on the bank worth of nights)

depends what part of the Trent
I fish one club stretch of tidal and you often need 6 to 8ozs its as rocky as hell and about 14 ft deep but the barbel are nearly always doubles
ok if Im fishing the middle stretches then 3 to 4 ozs is fine but I still like get them in fast as I dont like killing fish

Your an angler mate, you use what's necessary at the time. Got to say though don't fancy hauling a 10lb barbel in with an 8oz lead and the gear you must have to use in those river conditions.
