By no means am I saying these are bad reels. They've only been used on my river ‘carp rods' so only get a few months use each year. They've handled some very powerful fish that have flown upstream in big tides, and ploughed through weed beds. There is clearly just a bit of a design flaw as mentioned in a few posts below.
