Well IMO there is not a bedchair thats made that cant be improved with comfort and insulation with a correct quality SIM

Bought 14 bedchairs in total the last 2 years (long live the 30 days money back guarantee) 2 off them were good for my back and side so I imagine most who buy a bedchair that it is not suitable for their body and solve this with a sim

I'm a side sleeper and go the opposite way of having a bed that has give and prefer a hard flat bed. During Summer I will just use a normal fishing bed as I can find them bearable for short nights.
But soon as the long Winter nights kick in, my preference is to use an army surplus cot style bed. I have 5 of them and my best one is an American army one that I bought in the 80's and used it for years both for fishing and whilst in the army. Only problem with it though is the legs are not adjustable so I just take a few wooden blocks to level it up with. Once laid on it, its absolute bliss for spending 12+ hours on.
With just a foam roll mat they are comfortable and a SIM makes them just a bit better but either keeps the cold out from below in the Winter months. They are perfectly flat which is what makes them comfortable. One of the problems with a fishing style bed is their are 3 main sections, head end, middle and leg end and to get them comfortable, you have to balance all 3 sections. Its no good having a sagging middle if the head end and leg end are too firm and vice versa or other combinations, before long you end up with knees, hips, back and shoulders aching with not having the body in alignment.
One of the projects that I was going to do with one of my fishing beds to firm it up was to remove its cover and replace it with 3 sections of 12mm ply, fasten some battens onto the sections of ply underneath to hold it in place on top of the framework of the bed. And then in use just put my SIM on top.
Will it work, it should, when I go away in the car for a few days, I have a bed made out of a 6' length of 12mm ply that fits down the passenger side with the rear seats collapsed and is supported by the passenger seat folded down and a plywood box I made to support the foot end and the wheel arch also supports it. When I go away, I can sleep for hours on it in comfort so there should be no reason it would not work for fishing. The only difference would be what supports it and that would make no difference to comfort.

I am side sleeper and prefer a firmer bed
I use a SIM on my JRC xlite level bed it's very comfy for me a
With the added bonus if being a light bed for transporting around 👍

I quickly went from this is the most bonkers post I've read to - that's actually where every bedchair is going wrong. All beds start on a firm base, so elastics, webbing or even the old lafuma springs are never going to cut it. I think the ply would weigh a fair bit but I've gone from ‘lunatic' to you're well on the right lines. Well played

I even find the old bog standard camping bed that rolls up and has four legs far better than any fishing bed. And mainly because it has a flat base and is level and with a SIM on, very comfortable. It would be the ideal bed for me for fishing, not only for the comfort but for its size but sadly I find them too low for fishing and would not want rats and mice running all over me on a night as your almost sleeping on the floor so I stick to just using one when I am camping in a tent.
I don't think a 6' by approx 3' long length of ply that heavy, the piece I use now for in the car is not that heavy. Plus with todays fishing beds and the hinges designed to keep your bulky sleeping bag and a SIM in, there is plenty of room for the bed to fold up with it still inside, but would probably have to remove the sleeping bag and I never leave the SIM in in case it gets trapped in a hinge and punctured etc.
If I recall, the old type of fishing bed with the same piece of elastic that went round the framework more comfortable as over time, it leveled itself out were to sag. Now you have 3 pieces of elastic and all need tightening to match.
