I have 3 different tickets at the moment, and cant see this changing any time soon. All within 20 mins of my house.
1. Local club with a separate night ticket which allows me to night fish a couple of their lakes. I've been a member for over 15 years and won't drop the ticket for fear of never getting it back again. Its not uncommon for 200+ people to try and get hold of the night ticket each year and only a handful of tickets get dropped. Nice convenient fishing, one lake busy with a good stock, the other MUCH quieter and very low stock, but a truly lovely place to fish, and every bite is hard earned.
2. A rather special 60 acre pit, very few members and some incredible carp. I've been a member for a couple of years not but can see myself keeping this one for a long time, even if I leave the area which is potentially on the cards in the next couple of years.
3. A little water down the road where i usually get a winter ticket - its 10 mins from my house and has good winter form, with a chance of some nice fish in the high 30's. I'll often have it to myself as i fish weeknights.
The cost of the three tickets combined is less than £500 a year, and gives me loads of options depending on how much time I have, or what takes my fancy. I feel very lucky to have access to these lakes, i can't imagine joining the day ticket rat race, or fishing busy syndicate circuit waters where I'd be competing for swims every week.

not necessarily? more food going into the lake / more bodies around for security etc and also people actually enjoying something someones worked hard to make

Crikey I'm of completely the opposite opinion, every year I have members that for one reason or other don't fish. I'd love to have more anglers on the bank.
