I use a small section of rig foam and nick the hook point into that - same stuff you cut zigs from.

I've always found that just hooking the hook onto the ring of a rod eye with the point on the inside of the eye is enough protection as it is then protected by a "Metal cage" of the rod ring. I then pull down a tight rod sleeve for "Pole Tips" over both sections of the rod before putting it into the holdhall and that stops anything getting near the hook. I've never had a hook point damaged doing it this way over about the past 50 years.
