Bait matters

I would personally crush most of them up and use as a stick mix or ground bait for attraction and the rest I'd use as hardened hook baits.
Carp are scavengers so would soon get on the bait.

I wouldn't be happy putting them in whole but in a stick mix ground up will be fine. People give the carp to much credit. They eat geese ****

I think aside from any kind of fact or science around whether they're still actually useable or effective, it's also down to confidence using them. Or not, whatever the case may be.

I was in a similar situation recently. When clearing out the shed I came across a brand new, unopened bag of pre-covid 'spare' shelfies which on paper, went out of date in Dec-2019. I had the same thoughts about using them as free offerings, crushed, blitzed etc. In the end I binned them, as I just wouldn't have been confident using them. Perhaps I gave it too much thought, but I'm sure we've all been in the situation where something just doesn't quite feel right, or something is niggling at you, so you re-cast, change bait etc. You've just got to be confident in all elements of what you're putting out there (well, I have anyway!).
